Fixing Clear Coat on Hood

When I bought my 4runner the hood was pretty messed up as far as clearcoat goes. There is scratches from what appears to me like very fine sand paper. and an area where the paint seems perfectly fine. It is only the clearcoat and hasnt reached the basecoat at all. How would you go about repairing this? Ive havent painted before but Im willing to try on my hood. Worse comes to worse I take it to a paint shop to be painted. What are the steps i need to take to get this taken care of. The more detailed the better cause im a beginner. Let me know if you want a picture of the hood.

Well if the clear hasn't gone through to the base paint, you can buff it out with a buffer and some compound! OR, you can sand with 1500 grit, then 2000 grit sandpaper to sand the scratches out of the clear and then buff it out!

Take a high resolution pic and let me see it.

If the clear is peeling, sand it down, primer, and repaint, and clear coat it.

My bet is you just have swirl marks.

You need a "Corey Cable" aka wash, clay bar, polish and wax using Griots Garage products.

I wish it was just swirl marks, I dont think it is.

So Im assuming my two options are wet sand at about 2500 grit? Then Buff them out?

and totally repaint it (primer/base/clear)

mine was horrible, so much worse than that, i had to opt to painting it, i tried to buff my best and after like 2 or 3 times i gave up and decided it wasnt even worth the effort, but if you dont fix the clear coat soon your gonna have the cloud job that comes next, and that is one ugly site =X

I think that one needs repainting...

I'm about to flat black my hood until I get the cash for a paint job. My hood is the only part that really looks bad.

Good luck with yours.

well so I think the consensus is repainting it. Do to the fact that I dont have to supplies to do this job (i.e aircompressor, paint gun ect.). Where should i take it to be repainted, I live in Az (gilbert, queen creek area). How much should it cost?

that is just the picture, there is however a small dent (hardly noticable, cant see it in pictures) drop dead center of the hood. Anyone know how good those paintless dent repair people are? I got a neighbor that will do it for free for me? Any recommendations on paint shops?

Usually those paintless dent repair people get most of the dent out, but it still sometimes looks like a woodpecker got a hold of it. Just have the dent fixed when you have it painted, if it's one little bitty small ding dent like you say, it should be included in the paint job as a complimentary fix (I would, as this is good for repeat business tactics) with the price I quoted you, just be sure to point it out. If there is any other dings or dents, there will be a charge to fixed, otherwise it's painted as is aftering prep sanding. As for where to get it fixed in your neck of the woods, I have no idea...

Hey I forgot about maaco, you could probably get the whole truck painted for $99.99 if your not worried about quality! LOL
