Wow! The end product is great. Hey what is that paint gun? I'm going to be getting one this time around. Last full paint job I was using an electric sprayer, kinda like a Wagner. Works good but orange peel like crazy.

Not the cheapest or most expensive...
It has a couple of tips so I used the bigger one for the epoxy primer

CLEAN surface before primer with the 101 grease and wax remover let it DRY GOOD!!!

2 primer to 1 hardner 1 reducer - 2 coats 10 minutes apart (clean gun) lacquer thinner or the reducer... I bought a gallon and just used it for cleaning.

base coat with smaller tip 4 paint to 1 hardner - 2 coats 10 minutes apart ( clean gun)

clear with smaller tip 4 clear to 1 hardner 1 reducer -- 3 coats 15 minutes apart (clean gun)
I dis connect the air from the gun and let gravity do the work cleaning, by just filling the pot about 1/4 slosh around and pull the trigger... repeat till clear
Then leave some reducer in the pot and hang it up so it doesn't dry out. Dump it and pour on next product, attach air and clear the gun of reducer till you get to whatever your spraying next ( repeat)
Set the gun pressure at #30
take your time and get the right amount of reducer. Pressure, tip adjustment, distance from surface, and speed of spray... overlapping a little with each pass.
you can build a simple DIY paint booth...I didn't and am completely satisfied with the results. Have FUN!!!
the paint shop sells cups for mixing and they have the ratios on the cup... makes it very simple.
my final sanding was with 320 grit before primer

IF I'd have had everything I needed and could have done the repair on the rear quarter panel, I'd be done, and it only took a week to do. Taking my time and enjoying the process.

great question...
I didn't. Who knows how long it will be before I find a donor truck to hack on, so I decided to just paint it and I'll cut out and repair whenever I get the stuff I need.
be like fixing a fender bender wreck...

you can see the rust issue is at the very bottom of the panel in front of and behind the wheel well... the rocker trim covered most of the front issue... if I never fix it is OK with me we're not selling this one anyway and heck I'm 66 years old I'll be lucky to enjoy it for another 10 years
then the grandkids can enjoy it.

 

Here's hoping you get at least 30 years to enjoy it. Looks great. Great job bringing one of these old rigs back to life.

Fat mat the whole inside of the truck...

 

Using 1/4" plywood for rear side panels, covering them with vinyl from hobby lobby and painting it with the sems napa red to match the rest of the interior.

Here's the vinyl covered plywood ($50 for materials for both sides) with a
3 way POLK AUDIO dxi690... 6X9 ( I bought for $60 for the pair) light works and decided to use the old door to look more oem...
