First time off the pavement in the 4RNR

Earlier the gf and I went out for a few to take some pics for the yotatech calender.

Havent had the runner long, this was the first time I've had the chance to play around with it a little off road...When I put it in 4low to go up a pretty steep hill, it just spun the tires. I know I don't have the best off road tires, but it shouldnt of been that bad..So I backed up a little bit, stayed in 4low but this time in 2nd gear when I got to the base of the hill..went right up without flinching.

We were out around a soft sand dry river bottom, had to through it a little to get out there and a little to get out on the way back. Again in 4low, just spun the tires..4low in 2nd gear and it cruised over the sand no problem..

I'm still new to toyota trucks and I'm still learning, but whats the reduction in gear ratio in 4low on these things? Is it really that much where being in 1st gear in 4low will just spin the tires? The runner has bfgs, but theyre not all terrains or anything, just standard radials.

When I had my Jeep XJ, it had about the equivelant in tires, but in 4low it would basically idle up whatever I want it to and I damn sure never blew the tires off it lol.

Depends on the tranny, but most 1st gear is 3.83. Turbos had a 4.31 first gear.

Gear drive tcase is 2.28:1

Chain drive tcase is 2.56:1

To the OP - sounds like you need to work on line selection. Sounds like you got wheels off the ground and didn't have enough speed in 1st to bridge the gap, then in second you did. That's OK sometimes, but generally, you want to take the obstacle as slow as possible to minimize damage.
