First 3vze timing belt

I have a failing water pump, so I started the tear down to replace that and the timing belt. But, I have quick question that I couldn't answer with all the great guides that are on this site (thank you to everyone who writes them)! I have everything disassembled except for the timing components.

I removed the hydraulic tensioner while attached to the fan idler bracket as described in buckz6319's write up. Now when I turn the engine to find TDC, I feel like the belt is trying to jump a tooth, so I haven't tried turning it anymore.
Should I have set TDC while the tensioner was still pressing on the pulley? Or will I be okay to keep turning it to find TDC? Thanks! I'm sure I'll have more questions through the process.

You'll be ok without the tensioner in place. Pull the belt off and then move the crank and cams in a clockwise direction to align the timing marks.

You are working on a non-interference engine so you have freedom to move the crank and cams without the belt in place.

Thank you for assuring me that I wasn't going to screw stuff up. Got it lined up to TDC today. Just waiting for the new parts now. Another question, is it okay to reuse a hydraulic tensioner? According to the FSM, mine tests okay. I would like to just replace it, but I need my rig back on the road and none of the parts stores in my town can get one until next Tuesday or so.

You can re-use the tensioner. Inspect it closely for leaks. I've seen 'em test ok, but with a small leak fail soon after the T-belt change.

To re-use it, you'll need to retract it slowly with a vise or a large C-clamp and insert a small allen wrench into the 'grenade pri' hole. Only pull the pin the tensioner and belt are re-installed....it's all in the FSM.
