Just finished rebuild on my 3.0 on a 94 4-runner,it is needing a muffler, I was wondering if anybody has gained more power by eliminating the CAT and putting a HP muffler or an HP exhaust system from the collector back any opinions outthere? would like to get her breathing better,I don't think headers are worth the hassle on this.

 

I installed a Magna Flow cat from Performance Products on my 88, it was $90 with free shipping, made a HUGE difference over the stock failing cat....I do have a Borla catback on my truck and it even sounds louder / deeper with the new cat... I wouldnt get rid of it all together for emissions purposes!

 

Thanks for the reply,I have a feeling the cat or the muffler is restricting the flow,the motor only has about 20 miles,just trying to get the kinks out,it is idling good and smooth,revs good,but seems to be holding back under load ,thought it was timing messed with restabbing the distributor one tooth one way then the other wouldn't start either way,heard a klunk,worried about bending a valve so I put it back in according to the FSM,like it was before and it starts right upand smooth set timing but stll seems to hold back,maybe I need to change wires,rotor and,cap they have 135000 mi. originals,I guess you can never get enough troubleshooting experiance.

 

I can't believe you go through all the trouble of rebuilding the 3.0 and not replace the simple tune up parts you need a good foot in the as* for that one , a complete and use only Yota wires and plugs for the best performance and fuel mileage.

 

I knew someone was going to give me that, but after spending 1000+ I wanted to make sure it was goin to fire up and run , we've seen so many on this forum try to rebuild these 3.0's and have to tear right back into them just to get them started, as soon as I got it to run I ordered the tune up kit from Frank Toyota,but I figured I could get by,I'm still not convinced that is all my problem, glad to hear from a fellow harley guy,I got a 77 FX kick start only you better have good wires,points,andplugs for that or you can kick her all the way hell and not get it started,By the way back in the day a harley person wouldn't be caught dead on a toyota site HA!

you can't bend a valve by moving the distributor. and yes , get a new cat, deleteing yours will gain you no power unless its clogged,and then you should replace it, if the old one is in good shape , you can get good money at a recycling place, some pay almost $100 for used cats.

 

Ya you are right but when you just put so much in to it a guy thinks the worst,can a Cat clog up? I was thinking it was probably a cloged muffler it sat outside for a year mice or wasps nest and then it looked like it was rotting through before the rebuild,I don't know was just wondering if those high performance exhaust systems with bigger pipes make a diff on this 3.0

 

Has anybody out there installed a good sounding good flowing high perf muffler on their toy?

 

When I did my rebuild I bought the LCE street header kit, the test pipe, and the full 2 1/4" exhaust. There should be a link in my sig. When I first got the truck running I just had the stock cat and stock exhaust. I then added the test pipe and LCE exhaust. The test pipe is now sitting on my work bench since without the cat the exhaust was so loud my girlfriend wouldn't ride in the truck. Amazing how much quieting the cat does. I now have the stock cat on there, I need to order a high flow one from LCE. With the cat the exhaust note is nice and deep. Throaty but not annoying. I'm not sure if it did a lot for performance since I did everything all at once, but I sure do like it. Although, it does seem to rev a little easier now.

ya I disconnected the pipe between the cat and the muffler, just to check out how it ran sounded loud,deep and throaty but not nearly as loud as just straight pipe. I just wanted to check to see if it ran better not hesatating between 2000 + 3000 rpm but was pretty much the same

 

Nice pictures on your rebuild,you did everything just as I,but I didn't do headers or oversized valves, what were the valve spacers that you showed broken?

 

Did a shim crack, how did that happen?
