I have an 87' 4runner 22RE. I tried to get my annual inspection today and failed only on the low speed test. High speed past without a problem. I have a brand new catalytic converter and was able to pass last year. I haven't noticed any changes in how the engine runs. It has started idling higher recently though. I'm not sure where to look. It seems like the cat. is ok I hope and that my truck is just running rich at idle.

 

How much higher is it idling? I am assuming it failed for HCs? Did you try jumping out the connector to see if there are any codes?

 

Some 411 about what actually failed would be nice.

 

What I like to do is drive to another state,tag it there,drive back laughing at smog test and the anal ways of texas.Oh and your just visiting,even if youve lived there 5 years.

 

For real. Did it fail HC or CO? It could have failed because its idling too high, outside the range of "idle" for the tester machine.
