OK I re geared the 4 runner and someone had replaced the gears with 4:56's and the rear carrier has clutch plates and 4 gears internally on it. Buddy whos been doing 3rds for 15+ years said its a LSD and its stamped Toyota motor co on it.
What Im curious about is the plates inside look like friction plates.
Doesnt look like my old carrier in my other 4 runner either.
It came out of the 8" rear on a 94 4 Runner.

 

Looks like a sidegear washer. If that is only 1 clutchplate there then it's not a LSD....it would be a 4 pinion open case.....very common to most V6 trucks.

 

Should be VERY easy to test. Stick your fingers in and try to rotate that splined socket while holding the splined socket on the other side still.

Toyota never sold a North American truck with an LSD before 1995, but I have seen a 1990-1995 Hilux Surf with a white sticker saying LSD in red right by the fill cap on the rear diff. The would be a logical place to put the sticker too if you had to use LSD additive.

 

dont know, it looks like 3 or so plates.

 

Test it! Should be easy to spin if its open.
