Wink extreme turd polishing/2.4L 4cyl 22re

ive read a couple of the other threads on turd polishing the 3slow and such and i was wondering, what could u do to a 2.4L that would just make people cringe? plenty of room in there. why not move some stuff around and pop in a supercharger and some nice crazy stuff that would b a total waste of money? any ideas?

22re actually has more aftermarket options than the 3.slow.

The first step is obvious: 22RE -> 22RET

Then there are also cams, bigger turbos, better intakes, etc.

I have a buddy who's got an 86 pu with a 22re carbed, bored over .050". I don't know much else about it, besides it's mighty zippy with the stock 29's. He can get the tires to chirp in 3rd gear. I got to lookin' around on the net for other people over-boring and using strokers and I found this here.http://www.celica-gts.com/forums/ind...showtopic=6017

did you not think that maybe the reason people talk so bad about the 3.0, is that there was a better option available? (i'm talking about the 22re)

people put turbos on their 22res (and they also came with one as an option at one point). they do full exhaust systems, performance cams and all sorts of head work. why do people put so much into these engines? because they are a great design. they regularly make it to 400k miles, and with all the proper maintenance and some mechanical know-how, a friend of mine's 22re made it to 800k miles.

this engine is so simple and bulletproof, that most people will take it over the extra ~40 horsepower that the 3.0 offers.

i don't know the real figures, but people claim to be able to get up to 175 hp out of a 22re with enough modification.

not to mention it will like the high rpms better, do better on gas, etc. i know i've heard about a 22re beating a 3.0 in a race more than once

I like the "idea" of a 22RE in it being simple, I like 4 bangers, and all that.

But I still think there is still no replacement for displacement.

What I do like about the 22RE is it there is a much larger aftermarket following for it than the 3.0 as someone already pointed out. I could see myself if I owned one of those 22RE's putting headers, and a high quality exhaust on it, with the TRD cams, and an intake, as well as getting the metal timing chain guides and making it screamer. But somehow I also like the torque of my 3.0.

And mod for mod, you're still gonna get more downlow torque out of the 3.0.

If you did an exhaust, cams, and headers on both engines, the 3.0 would easily come out ahead.

And the general consensus is that hte 3.0's headgasket issues are as a result of heat due to the crossover dumping all the exhaust in front of the #6 exhaust valve. If this is indeed true and the main culprit of head warpage, then the mods that are undertaken to enhance performance on the 3.0 like headers, exhaust, cams, etc, will essentially reduce heat buildup in critical areas and remove any doubt of comparable reliability to that of the 22RE. I still think the 3.0 is reliable as hell though, especially since it has more working parts than the 22RE.

I think it's much more reasonable to build a 22RE for big power than a 3VZE, if for no other reason than space in the engine bay.

man if you love the 3vz-e torque in ur 4wd then you would fall in love the 3vz-e torque in a 2wd. Just sometimes i wish i had a manual tranny in my 2wd! As for the mods its just so hard to find any aftermarket for the 3vz-e's. N if there is the parts are hella expensive. but as for the 22re motors there aftermarket is endless. but hopefully that will change soon! but both are great lil motors!
