Exhaust system replacement Q&A

Hi yotatech-ers. I was planning on replacing my exhaust system soon, and I'm wondering: where do I buy a stock system. Who do you recommend to buy from. Is it all bolt together, or do I need to weld? I looks like I could just buy a catalytic converter, and get a cat back system, but I want all of your expertise. Also, I dont know (due to prior ownership tinkering) if I am missing a front O2 sensor on my 22Re, or did the 92' pickup ever have one off the exhaust manifold to begin with. I assumed it did, but I only have a sensor in the back on this system, which is just a straight piped glow master (40 series? Maybe.) I'm not throwing any o2 codes, but i thought id ask. Thanks.

I have been using Walker Exhaust Parts for Years Now.

I have not needed any parts for my mid- eighties vehicles for some time

In the past I have run into things not fitting when trying to mix exhaust systems brands

I use Bosal exhaust for a Tacoma 2.7 because it's 2" and cheap and just about the right fit. I cut and weld where it needs to after the muffler. I haven't tried a 2.7 4runner exhaust but I imagine it's still not the best route cause the 3RZ manifold is opposite the 22R/RE.

Walker has this handy little full stock exhaust. Nice.

the bosal looks like the route to go if I want to fab/cuss my way through the build process. Not bad if I was going for performance tho right? I wonder if the new stock exhaust would really detract from overall performance (power,mpg,etc.)

I mean of course, i want headers, high flow cat, 304 stainless steel pipe high performance cat-back system, to know whether or not backpressure helps an engine like the 2.4 22re, how to seduce any woman, but I also just want an exhaust that goes in easily (ish) and to not break the bank-card.

Most people don't go bigger than 2 1/4" for a 22re. Back pressure is needed in most all gas motors. 2" is fairly common and affordable. If you don't want to weld it then I would get prices from an exhaust shop doing a full system for you or having them install a system you supply.

Having 1 or to bolt together joints is fine, I have one, but I would not want a complete bolt together system. Too many chances for leaks and things heat and contract with heat cycles.

If I were you I'd really look at intended use of rig and plan accordingly for future build. I'm running a DT header, to 2.25 pipe, to a Flowmaster DBX muffler out rear driverside. Tucked up tight to avaoid trail damage. Re-configuring rear shocks required re-routing exhaust. If I had planned accordingly I would not have had to have exhaust redone past muffler. Yes ther is an O2 sensor down stream from manifold.

oops on confusion. I meant a single O2 sensor off manifold. At least i’m Not tracking a dual O2 sensor system on a 22re.

The check engine light is not on when I plug in the single o2 sensor. Which is down stream from the cat. I think this is the federal emissions 49 state. I like thinking I can set up the cat and back to be bolt on. What are you really getting out of headers except more noise off the manifold, and a little hp?
