Exaust +

I was thinking the next thing I want to focus on is getting a new exaust. My Question is would I gain anything by getting 3rd party quality headers and bumping up the exaust pipes by a size or two?
Or is redoing the exaust with same headers going to give same overall performance? Currently the pipes have small rust holes and the header is rusty but fine.

What I would be idealy looking for is some sort or boost in the 1500 to 2500 rpm range. Or at the least a nice deep, non ricey sounding truck. I pretty much like the it sounds and performs now, but I was hey if I gotta fix it may as well get some more stuff done.
I also love the look of shotgunned pipes, but dont see it too much on yota's. You guys think it would alright for wheeling or is that just asking mother nature to give you a free custom pipe job?

I'm just trying to get some ideas and research some stuff while I save and/or pay off a credit card...So maybe in the next 3 or 4 years

from what i have seen, headers, exhaust, all of that good dont do nothing for power or mpg's but only add some better sound, performance end is NO DICE.
I could be wrong, but from the other threads on the same topic, unless you are turboed or highly moded, stick with the basics.

my 77 with stock exhaust was a gutless wonder compared to my 82 with 2.25" exhaust/cherrybomb glasspack.

Overall, if you think the current performance is good, I'd stick with it.

If you had headers , high flow cat, good muffler, you'll see some improvement. Not going to be 25 hp, but with the 22RE, anything added is nice.

Headers, lot of people like the LCE headers but they are pricey. A lot of people like Doug Thorley headers, some say the 22RE responds better to that one. Some go for the NWOR headers but then you have to deal with their customer service.

Stick with 2 1/4 all the way. You'll see improvements, I just don't know how much your hoping to net out of it.

Do a search on here for 22RE headers or even google it. You'll find plenty of info to chew through.

a full 2.25 exhaust and headers will give you a nice little boost in power. i have lce headers and a full exhaust and id say it sounds pretty good, for a 4cyl at least. i cant testify how it compares to stock because i put it all on when i rebuilt my motor but it seems pretty good.

Hmmm , guess I gotta start picking out my future header. Forgot to mention I was thinking of using 2 1/4 or even just 2". I heard that larger diameter pipes will help top speed but hinder low end torque...this true?

And what about ceramic headers? Are they more for racing or extreme applications.

And just so you all know I dont expect much of any boost, well maybe just a little boost going up long hills so I dont have to row it as bad.

As for the diameter, you want to keep exhaust velocity at a max. At high speeds, larger pipe is better; at lower speeds, smaller pipe is better. You'll have to talk to someone who knows where the happy medium is.

anything larger than 2.25 on the 22RE will cause a negative effect on the engine. Too much back pressure. Just run 2.25 from the head all the way back.

Ceramic coated headers are nice, they just won't dis-color like a normal one would. So if your concerned with the headers looking new the whole time, shell out for the extra.

How do you get too much back pressure from the pipe being too large?

Sorry, I was typing and trying to leave work at the same time. Not enough back pressure.

I know that there are some 22re's running off of 3" exhaust, but they usually have a turbo.

dont put an exhaust on a 22 re its kinda embarrassing when your at a stop light and your accelerate and it sounds like your going really fast but the car beside you is going faster but its still going super slow!
