i called the local dealer and they want $300 for a new timing cover, and close to $300 for an oil pump and then $75 for a reman water pump. They did have a timing chain kit for $179 which isn't terrible for OEM but given the rediculously high cost I think I will just go with engnbldr, since I only have 99K on my oil pump I think I should be able to reuse that as well

You can get an Aisin timing cover for $130 at most, maybe $100 (it shows the same part number) from autohausaz.com.

An Aisin oil pump is $80.

An Aisin water pump is $50-something from there or several other sources.

If you're going to buy OEM parts, don't pay retail prices at a local dealer unless you're in a pinch. I'm about to order various odds and ends from 1sttoyotaparts.com. Other similar Toyota-specific discount parts outfits can be found with a little searching.

Autohousaz is cheaper than 1sttoyotaparts on the Aisin parts I mentioned.

I can't stand the dinky catalog system 1sttoyotaparts and similar outfits use. My 86 is in the old vehicle category, and some parts don't show after clicking and clicking through the menus. So, I go to http://www.toyodiy.com, put in my VIN, and find the part numbers I want. Enter those into the part number search thingy at 1sttoyotaparts or wherever. Much easier.

FWIW, I'll be using the timing kit I got from Engnbldr.

Something to consider is the Aisin quality of the 80's may not be the same today. I think Aisin is only a label, not a manufacturer. Same goes for Rock.

Ted (engnbldr) seems to be on top of who makes what. If you ask him who is making Aisin branded timing parts these days, please post his reply.

well, you can't go wrong with Ted's prices. For $162, I could get the timing set w/steel rail, timing cover and a water pump and oil pump. I figure I'll just go that route because enough people on here have had good experiences with his parts doing complete rebuilds and I'll just be doing a timing chain.

Why do you want to replace the oil pump? They hardly EVER go bad.. There really isnt much to them.

Re-use it. If the waterpump is good and not leaking then reuse it aswell. Its easy as heck to get at on the 22re.

I agree on the oil pump. If it looks good and measures within spec, just put in a new o-ring and front crank seal.

My water pump has been in use for 23 years. It seems to still be ok, but I'd rather replace it proactively. Unlike the oil pump, it has an internal seal that I doubt would last another 100K+ miles.

I guess I will just get the kit and get a water pump locally. I'm thinking I'll just re-use my timing cover as well, cuz it only has 99K miles on it.

I just replaced my timing chain last weekend with ed's kit. I bought his chain kit, water pump, oil pump, water pump and timing cover. Everything fit great!

^^^How was the quality of the timing cover? Did you have any problem with fitment like some others have stated? Particularly the two frontmost bolt holes that connect to the oil pan?
