Engines....what To Do?!?!?

Hey guys, new to the site (which is a great site) and need info on what to do for an engine in my newly acquired truck. I paid a whopping $0.00 for it today! Overall the truck is in decent shape. It is a 1989 standard cab pick up with NO rust on the bed! Body wise, it needs a front fender and 2 bumpers. The engine has a hole the size of a fist in the side of it so I need to replace the lower end or do a swap. Tight on money right now due to building a new house so take that into consideration. My options, find another short block to rebuild, find another complete motor, get a reman. motor, or throw in my 70 vette 350 out of my 68 z camaro I am getting ready to sell. Money wise, which is my cheapest option? It would be nice to put my 350 in it because I already have the 350 which only has 300 miles on it, but not sure what it involves and the cost. Any ideas guys?

Well your best option would be to drop the 350 in if you can. You'd be paying a whopping $0.00 for it .

On the flipside, it's probably not gonna be easy. A 350 isn't a small engine and your vehicle isn't a big truck, so it's quite obvious where you'll run into problems. You'll need to look into lifts and drops and all sorts of stuff. As far as the powertrain, I don't know how everything will bolt up, you'd have to research a lot.

Your EASIEST option would be to put in a remanned 22RE in there, but it'll cost you. It all depends if the time saved is worth your money.

I would go with the 350 as well. here check this site out, it talks about all the motors you can put in a toyota and what you will need to complete the swaphttp://www.mindspring.com/~jayk3/toyota/swaps.htm

Thanks vette, looks like the 350 would cost way more than just buying a 4 cyl to put back in it. I'd have to lift the truck, mod the firewall, mod the radiator mount, get a trans adapter, and a few other things. Too much stuff and too much money. Back to the drawing board. Might look at finding a turbo toyota donor motor and accessories.

Also, rich, do you have a good block with a good crank and rods? If so, how much shipped to 49079 in michigan?

Yuck... I have never heard so many people on this forum vote for the 350... why not keep it in the Toyota family? Do a 7mgte swap... probably less work than fitting a Chevy engine in there...

No on the 350, you would be spending a lot of time and money on adapting it to work. It's not just an engine--it's also the transmission. And a hundred other details.

I just read John Phillips article in Car and Driver May 06 about a junk yard called "Detroits Parts Galore" "any 4 banger $195, any v-6 $268 and a 30 day gaurantee" Check it out if you close to it in Michigan.

that 350 will eat drivetrain components pretty quick. not to mention all the hidden costs, nickel and dime parts etc. it WILL add up.

I like the idea of the 350 and it would surely be a fun project. However, if you're on a budget then I would rebuild 22RE. I got my 1993 for free as well with a spun bearing. I was able to find a non running motor for $100 locally. I pulled the crank out if it and bought the master rebuild kit from engnbldr.com. If you have any motor experience at all, these are pretty easy to rebuild. I'm into mine for about $500. If you have the money, I would do the head as well. I skipped it on mine because I was short on cash. I figure I'll do that later on.

The 350 Swap is NOT your cheapest route. I just went down this road. after you price out all your adapters, wiring, custom rad, custom drive shafts, motor mounts, electric fan. etc you will be into the swap for $800.00 or more

Buy a new block and re-build (The option I went with)

Most of the Guys that just said "Do the 350 Swap" dont even have a clue whats envolved in doing this type of swap.

Check over on pirate4x4.com in the toyota forums check the toyota FAQ Section for all the info on 350 swaps. (Warning DONT POST ANY NEWBIE QUESTIONS like "How do I do a 350 swap" The pirate Boyz are NOT friendly to newbies.. just read dont ask)

Whats with all you guys and the 350's? 22r's are the best engines ever made. I would get a used one from somewhere and slap it in. Then when you have the money rebuild the one that you took out.

well, in all fairness, the 350 really isn't a bad engine. just doesn't have the longevity of the 22R(ever compared the connecting rods? the 22R's are longer and have a bigger journal).

i'd sure take a 350, or better yet, a 4.3 over a 3.0...

Well, looks like I will just try to sell my 350 to get cash for building a 22rte or 22r. Its a 70 vette 350 with a mild build. I have 5500 into it, put it in my 68 Z then the radiator got a hole and blew antifreeze all over the paint and chrome. It ate the paint up and killed the chrome. I was not happy, so my car has been parked ever since. The motor has about 300 miles on it. If anyone is thinking about a 350 project, let me know...lol.

By the way, thanks for all the replies and not pouring gas on me and lighting the match. I also knew I would get flamed, but posting a obvious question as a new member is a good way to find out who will be truely helpful on a site. Have to say this site is a class act! Way better than pirate. Keep up the good work guys, and i'm sure i'll probably be a regular on here now.

Knowing whats involved, and thinking itd be cool to see someone do such a swap are two very different things. I personally have no idea what kinds of little details would be involved. But the idea is pretty cool regardless in my opinion.

Gotta another question. I think I have decided on the 2.7 taco swap, but one question I haven't seen answered is the oil pan clearance on a 89 IFS. What pan do I need for IFS? I checked out big mikes swap, but he did his in a solid axle older truck. This sounds like a pretty good swap overall.

I probably need the ecu from the tacoma too right?

You will need pretty much everything from the donor truck. Engine, wiring, ECU. This will also be a more time intensive swap. Everthying on the 2.7 is opposite of the 22RE.

I bought a 3.4 a few years back to do the swap, and decided it was WAY to much $$.

My vote is 22RE, or 22RTE...
