I replaced my starter and battery together and the engine doesn't turn over or even attempt to turn over. Turn the key and one click then I just hear what sounds like the started motor spinning. Had the battery and starter tested everything is good. I cleaned and sanded all my ground connections still no luck. ANY help would be great thanks

 

If the starter motor is truly spinning and the starter is properly seated in the bellhousing, the fault very likely lies in the starters' over-running clutch, or in missing flywheel teeth.

Ordinarily, the starter motor contacts don't make until the drive teeth have engaged the flywheel, so that means that the fault is somewhere in the starter drive process.

You did check the new starter against the old one to ensure that you got the right parts dint ya??

 

Yes the starter matched up and it is seated properly when it was removed I saw the flywheel and the teeth are all there

 

Would'nt be the first time a new starter was bad right out of the box. Is it a parts store rebuilt??

 

Bought new from autozone took it back had it tested and it worked fine

 

I have never seen an auto parts store test that can prove the overrunning clutch.

Maybe they can, in fact, test that, I don't know.

Like I said before, if the starter motor is actually spinning, the fault is very likely in the starter drive, or starter alignment.

What was wrong with your old starter??

 

ok so just to be sure i took the starter back and got another one and im still having the same problem so i took a hot wire straight from the battery to the starter and im getting the same results so what else could cause the no crank?

yes it spins. i tested with the starter removed i was thinking maybe it doesnt engage the flywheel properly

 

Could be just a bunch of bad starters from auto zone it does not surprise me.

Just why did you replace the starter to start .??

The thing with a bad starter drive it might very well engage the fly wheel then just spin without turning the engine over.

I wonder if the click is the starter drive moving towards the flywheel

 

Get OEM for less than $100 and be done with it.
CAVEAT: You will have to send in the original Toyota starter to get core refund.

Toyota Parts Zone does not carry the 1.0-kW starter anymore so, yes, I bought the REMAN STARTER 1.4KW Part Number 28100-35060-84

 

problem solved so i did a voltage drop test and found that from the positive on the battery and where it connects to the starter i was loosing 11.7 volts only leaving me with about .5 of a volt to the starter. i ended up taking apart the aftermarket battery terminals and there was rust/corossion inside and once everything was cleaned up it turned right on first shot
