Hey I'm about to buy an 87 4runner tomorrow but the guy i might buy it from did an engine swap himself cause he's a mechanic. My question is what should I look for that could be problems with the swap? Engine leaks or bad connections all around or give me some specifics I don't know too much about cars so I need to know what to look for.

 

what engine did he swap in?

Look for butchered connections and whatnot, if it is a clean swap then he probibly did it right, if there are stray wires and whatnot everywhere then its probibly a hackjob.

 

he swapped in another 22r, i'm not sure why yet i hope to find out tomorrow, but if everything looks clean and runs clean should it be fine or are there other things or sounds i should look for when its running?

 

If he actually swapped in a 22R (carbed), I personally wouldn't mess with it. Now if he simply replaced the original 22RE (EFI) with another of the same, and he truly is a mechanic, then you'll probably be alright.
