is it possible to swap my 22r and 5 speed tranny from my 85 yota truck to a 4runner? and if so, what years can i swap it into?

my 85 yota was totaled 2 weeks after new tranny and engine was put in...

I might agree that Google is your buddy but why spend hours browsing over mostly useless knowledge when some of us on YT will spend time to tell you what you need to know and all you have to do is read?

Yes, you can swap a 22r and trans into a 4Runner. There are some issues that may arise depending on the engine and trans the 4Runner has/had. Read on....

22R's were available (81/82? damn celica muddles things) through 88, though there are reports of 22rs from 91 and 92 vehicles around it seems the carb went from standard equipment to an option around 88 but disappeared around 91-92.

A full 22r engine (carb, intake, exhaust, distributor, etc) is swappable to (obviously) any other vehicle that had a 22r engine. There may be some differences that may make your carburetor, distributor and other items unusable on a different year vehicle due to emissions equipment. Additionally, a 22r long block assembly- block and head, are mostly interchangeable with the 22re as long it's not a turbo'd truck: 22ret, 22rtem etc.. The differences between carb'd and efi generally amount to different intake and (possibly) exhaust manifolds and obviously, the 22re is fuel injected so the carb and fuel pump won't be used and the distributor is mostly unusable: there are instances where someone with EFI may want the carb'd distributor but that's mostly due to propane conversions.

Anyhow... putting a 22r into a vehicle that has a 22re is fairly simple: remove the old engine, put the new one in and swap over things (like intake, exhaust and distributor) to the new engine... but don't forget to remove the fuel pump and install the block off plate from the 22re onto the 22r.

The transmission on an 85 4wd is likely a w56-, 86-88 is a w56b, and post 88 are w56c/d/e. Not much of a big difference other than the a/b trans have a different transfer case than the later c/d/e. See here for a breakdown on transmissions. Still, they are mostly interchangeable as a whole assembly. The interior shift boot assembly from the early vehicle may be needed to seal the cab, or possibly shift boots may need to be fabricated.

Vague answer... you can swap any motor/tranny into any vehicle with time and $$$

Easiest... get the same model and year 4runner as your truck with 22r/5spd, this will be as close as your going to get to an easy bolt on swap.

Cheapest... buy the cheapest 4runner you can find and swap EVERYTHING over to the 4runner and forget about the little stuff that 4runners have that the PU's don't.
