Engine rebuild

Well with not really knowing the true miles on my engine. Im going to rebuilt it and go .5mm over on the pistons.

http://www.northernautoparts.com/part/ek-oh91550

Is this a reputable kit? typically i stick with OEM only but at 75 bucks a piston and 250 for the rebuild kit. im way out of budget.

Do the cylinders require a fresh bore? Is there damage? If you are just doing this for fun and because you'd like to freshen things up.....I'd recommend keeping the stock pistons.

If you are trying to make power....the cost of boring and getting new pistons probably isn't worth it.

You can hone the cylinders at home to get rid of any glaze and get a good cross hatch. Then just re-ring your existing pistons. Bingo.

I am looking to make more power. Im even considering boosting this engine. I have a crazy fab guy that builds all the turbos systems for my Celica's and he wants the strap a S/C on there similar to the 3.4

Well let me put it this way. Power costs $$$, and it is more expensive the smaller the engine.

You'll spend $2k rebuilding, boring, stroking, camming, etc this engine and you will still have increased your HP to maybe 150.

Put a turbo on it and maybe you can hit 200 but you will be a ticking time bomb and will be $3-4k deep.

If you want power....look at another engine. The 3.4 is a popular one. If you want a fresh rebuild....keep it stock and stick with the bolt on's and maybe a cam.

262hp for the stock 4.3 vortec? Maybe in the turbocharged GMC Typhoon. More like 155HP for the early carbed one, 130-155HP for the TBI one, 190-200 for the CPI one, and 170-200HP for the 96+ Vortec style.

But still....tons of aftermarket for that engine. Its a GM 350 with 2 cylinders cut off. They can make plenty of power and are very cheap. Just making it play with the rest of the truck is the hard part.

lol.....me neither, should have caught that. Another plus for the GM 4.3L is that it isn't that heavy. The stock 22re weighs around 350lbs. The 5VZ 3.4L is around 450. The GM 4.3L is 425-470 according to the internet.

Its all around just a great motor, except the early 90's with the spider injectors. Light compact and it has the 90* bolt pattern so you can hook it to about anything.

Plus it is easy to go 100% carburated with strong aftermarket support. So if someone really wanted to they could find a decent 4.3 and buy the carb conversion parts and still be under a grand. No fancy wiring.

The only bummer is the need for a transmission adapter....that will add some coin.

OR.....just freshen up the 22RE for less than $500 and drive it!

My vote would be k case 700r4 with a dana 300 for a good daily driver/wheeler. But like admiral said 500 freshen up your 22re and drive it.

nope still in LA county so gotta SMOG. im not putting a GM engine in there. I have a good 3MZ on a stand here and i am considering putting that in.

Im not having much luck finding a complete 5VZ. I can do all the mechanical work except machine work. I can rebuild the engine for less than $1000 and boost it for nothing. I have a fab shop
