Snap-on...I do have the FSM downloaded. I just didn't go by it. I assumed the highly retailed Haynes would be sufficient explaining the steps. I followed them to the "T". VERY CAREFULLY. The H-manual just doesn't cover one little step....oil the spacers. The H-manual also doesn't say to put the spacers on your new headbolts from engnbldr! (tongue in cheek, there ) You see, in paying so much attention to the torquing procedure, I didn't catch that the spacers weren't on the new bolts. I wasn't "smoking" anything, either...hehe. The next morning, when I went to do the other side, my mind wasn't so focus on remembering and following the steps that I was able to realize there WEREN'T spacers on the bolts. In true newbie fashion, I even wondered how important they were...der! Yeah, I am definitely learning. That's a good feeling. Oh! And the other good news is I didn't f%&k up anything majorly difficult to replace, and there are some people in the world with big hearts and take pity on us poor novices. (Thanks again Ted...big head to match your big heart) And thanks to you all at YT.
BTW, I meant little tips the manuals may not cover.

GS...What are you talking about adjusting the shims to spec? I had the valves inspected and cleaned and the heads resurfaced. The heads and cams are good to go, unless your saying there will be a valve clearance issues because I used spacers and a longer bolt on the cam bearing/cap? In the engnbldr kit, the headbolts are reusable and the gaskets are the steel lined Fel-pro. So, that's covered.

Jmach1...yes, I have 8 pot belly pigs...and a donkey..and a...

i don't post cause it seems to be a guy only club but i do read. btw guys, removed my oily dog avatar (from the Katrina abandoned animals fiasco) and when i get a few will make avatar of the 92, which is my vehicle. maybe you will like that better

can tell you that on tuesday it was quite a ride here. canon printer was refusing to print because of the new chipsets that try to block refilling...long story but the chips are faulty to begin with refill or not. i was trying to print the pics of the engine for thook and our friend helping. i was on the phone with canon tech (can i say tech...it was distanced out to some foreign land) and not a happy camper. the tech says sorry for the inconvenience...inconveniece is not the word i would use...and explained the pics were critical to getting my motor reinstalled. long and short canon is sending an entire replacement set of ink tanks. sometimes it pays to raise hell. as i was on the phone with canon thook comes up white as a sheet. is the motor okay i ask...he shakes his head and has the most worried look i have seen thru this whole project. i tell the canon rep that i need to go, that the pictures are mute at this point. i think he might even have felt a bit bad for me at that time judging from his comments.

so i ask thook what's up...and with pained expression he tells me what happened. he starts fumbling at this desk, where to post, who to call...what to do. i said thook, i have read about Ted on the forum and he is a stellar guy...everyone says how incredibly kind and helpful he is...give him a call. it was wonderful to listen to thook talking to Ted and start laughing.

thook has gone from complete overwhelm and baffle on my 92 to almost doing a rebuild...and i am so proud of him. we have been thru so many half assed mechanics. the one that is excellent that we found this past year no longer does the tear it down sorta stuff we need. he is excellent however, and has been a godsend for the things we can use his services for...and always more than willing to offer instruction.

it is forums like this that that are a lifeline to those of us in the outbacks of society trying to fix our vehicles, understand and learn. to that end, this group here has been wonderful. i was the one that actually found this forum eons ago...as i search forums for folks that know...on so many issues.

when we got the 86 we knew enough from web searches to replace the timing chain. shop prices astronomical...but we found a private individual who had a stellar reputation, used to be one of the top mech at toyota dealer, and has since returned to dealer. his price was almost half of everywhere else. year down the road oil seal leaks, should have been replaced with the timing chain...and we had to go to a local shop because mech number one now at dealer. they charged some huge fee saying it was almost as difficult as doing the chain. year later oil seal leaks again and we find out about the harmonic balancer. not having the money to go back to the shop and finding out they don't warranty they will do the job right...another very pricey job...thook talks to mech at original shop who says piece of cake...simple, easy do it yourself, takes about half hour. the long and short of it is we paid a lot to have seal replaced by them, telling us complicated time consuming job...only to find out that is not the case. and...and...we had one highly recommended mech replace the chain but not the seal or the harmonic balancer, and shop number two who replaced the oil seal saying mech number one should have...but they did not bother to replace the harmonic balancer. so in all of this we had a harmonic balancer that was probably original equip. i am so tired of mech and shops that act like they are professionals that cut corners and therefore are overcharging. explains to us why our neighbor, who could afford any shop he desired, does his own work...he wants to make sure it is done correctly.

thook has gone from being intimidated by the toys to understand and fixing. along the way sure you miss crucial steps, like spacers...but this is how one learns. it is simply part of the territory.

had it not been for all of you here we would never have even known to get the gaskets from one such as ted...and so many other things. i can't THANK YOU ENOUGH, ALL OF YOU.

i know, i know...you guys are brief on words...so just indulge a lady who is more verbose. i let thook do the posting but every once in awhile i just have to show up and say

rose

ps...ted, you are amazing. you are knowledgeable, honest, patient and so very kind. anyone who does not use you...it is their loss as i am sure with a heart like yours your life is so full. you just have no idea how with your reassuring words you completely changed a moment of terror to laughter for thook. to me, that is what life is really about...that we care about each other even if they are strangers to us.

Yea what I've learned working on my own vehicle is to look up what I need from the FSM and print it out then I save it. I have a binder almost full of the FSM. I only look at the haynes pos for something simple.

I was thinking Thook that you should have a good look at your fan bracket while your in there. If you feel any play or it doesn't turn smooth then replace it or better and cheeper yet put an electric fan in.

Oh, i was joking Supra. This last event just really drove something home for me. I mean a manual just shouldn't go leaving out little details. I do have quite a bit of the FSM printed already. I need to organize it, though. Binder...good idea. I'll use the Haynes for changing bulbs and things of that nature.

I'll look at that fan bracket, too. Thanks for the tip. I remember having read a thread or two about the electric fan replacement. Sounded good. Honestly, though, I hope I don't have to do another damn thing for a while once the top end is done.

good news is your learning... just not the smartest way

new bolts, new head gasket, good torque wrench and start over...
Where is the link to the mysterious FSM...???
