OK, while I was installing a new radio into my 1989 4runner some wires connected and shorted out my dash lights or so I think. After the sparks the backlights to my instrument cluster do not work and either do my rear lights. In the instrument cluster the cel, brake and 4x4 lights still work. On the rear the blinkers and brake lights still work. I checked all the fuses and did not find any to be blown. Would anyone have any ideas how to get the instrument cluster and rear lights to work. I was pulled over the other night for not having rear lights and I can't afford to have this happen often. Any help is appreciated.

Were you installing a radio with the lights or power on? The only thing that should be able to short is the constant 12v for the clock, assuming the truck is off..

Regardless, I'm 90% sure you tagged a fuse.. Take the right fuse out and test it or replace it.

The circuit you're looking for is 15A. Controls license plate light, tail light, inclinometer and dash light, rear winow switch, and a few more things... I have the electrical diagram which indicates a 15A fuse.. if it's not in the fuse box, check under the hood - near the passenger side relay box.

If that isn't it, and you have an aftermarket trailer wiring kit, it's probably worn thru and grounded out against the frame somewhere.

FYI: ALWAYS disconnect the battery positive terminal when you're working on ANYTHING electrical!
