I think this may be part of the EGR valve. It is aft of the EGR on the passenger side. I notice the plastic cover is completely off. The screws came out. Would this cause a code 71 ERG?

Also, how many bolts hold this on so I can remove and repair?

Use 5mm x 10 socket-head screws, and you don't have to remove anything to reassemble the valve (you can get in there with a hex-wrench).

Probably not. Of course, it is broken, and not difficult to fix, so does it really matter if it's the cause?

Yes, it definitely matters if it is "the cause." Then you would fix it.

But even if it isn't the cause, you need to fix it.

So it doesn't matter either way: you need to fix it.

I think you took scope's comment the wrong way. He's helped me personally several times and has lots of good info. I don't think he was questioning your judgement abilities on whether to fix it or not.

That being said, the PAIR valve does affect emissions along with the EGR. There's no CEL for a broken PAIR, so the ECU might be confusing the readings it's getting from the EGR into thinking that's the issue. I would not be surprised if when fixed (and after removing your EFI fuse in the engine bay fuse box for 1 min) your code 71 never shows up again. However if if does come back, then you most definitely have a busted EGR valve (or gas temp sensor).

 

Code 71 is the EGR temp sensor not sensing a change after a set amount of time.
Cause to look into are bad EGR modulator, bad EGR valve, green VSV blocked, vacuum lines to VSV connected wrong, the EGR tube plugged or the EGR temp sensor is faulty in some way.

The PAIR or AS valve just allows atmosphere to enter during decalleration, Its an exhaust leak if just left open like that.
just get replacement screws to close it.
But make sure the reed is still in it or it will cause you problems by allowing the engine to pull innert gasses into the airfilter.
