EGR and HG blowing?

EGR and HG blowing?
My check engine light has been on for a while now (2 weeks or so), its a code 71, egr, the light will go out every now and then but it comes back.
Last night I was driving home and my HG blew, sputtering then i look down and my temp is almost in the red. Lots of white smoke at start up too. Im planning on doing a full rebuild but Ive got a question.
Could my EGR problem caused the HG to blow?
Ive also got 214k on the motor, I think im the 3rd or 4th owner.
