EGR Filter?

EGR Filter?

When I was taking a look at my motor a couple weeks ago I noticed that there is a cap on the EGR valve. I opened it to find a dark colored filter underneath. Does this need to be replaced for any reason? Mine is pretty dark.

That's not the EGR valve. It's called the EGR modulator. That filter can be cleaned but you can buy a whole new modulator from Toyota for about $50.
The filter inside of it will get dirty, obviously, but what you need to worry about is the valve inside the modulator failing which would necessitate a replacement.

Moral of the story, don't worry about that thing unless you're getting EGR codes.
