EGR Delete?

Hey guys, Just seeing if it is even possible on these trucks to do away with the egr assembly, Im new to Toyotas still and if you have been reading my other posts I've learned ALOT from a blown head gasket which has turned into built head, upgraded cam, header etc. Im on the last steps and getting that tube with the EGR on it is giving me a fit, Because of the bodylift on my truck the 3 bolts that go into the head that the EGR connects to are near impossible with the EGR and everything on there, I know on small block chevys etc you can just make a block off plate for the intake, Just wondering if you can do that kinda stuff on a Toyota, or is there alot more involved on these things. Any advice would be appreciated

It definitely can be done with block off plates. There's some controversy around it, but it's been done by many successfully. Me included.

Search EGR removal. Mucho info.

three plates?

One is the 3 bolter for the EGR to the head at the passenger side.
One two bolter is to patch the input hole on the back og the Intake manifold...

Whats the third one for?

The EGR draws from "in" the head via two feed ports near the exaust ports - right?

BTW - some header flanges "accidentally" block off these ports...

Im trying to figure the 3 plate thing too? But only enough bolts for 2. Maybe different style intakes. I was going to cut apart my old egr tube and make my own plates, but that price isnt bad with new hardware too. So just block the 2 holes and cap the line and thats it?

Ok, I just went out and looked at mine and I need to know what Im supposed to cap, I have 3 line possibilities One of which I know goes to the factory air filter assembly, Theres that vacuum modulator (I guess thats what it is) Do I cap the port on the bottom of that...I guess I need to go hunt down some vacuum diagrams to get this thing back together...

I have the diagrams for the 22R in another thread, but is yours 22RE?
Here they are.

I could get the other ones if you need them.

Ok, so where does the hose from the bottom of the modulator go? and that hose coming off the left side of the modulator?... Also can you get rid of that resonator thing in the diagram

Confusing isn't it? I'll have to get my book, for a clearer pic. It's gonna take me a little while, I got a couple other things I have to do on the way. I'm not real familiar with the layout of those engines, I've seen quite a few, just never owned/worked on one. Me 3vze.

Well as of now I capped the one line going into the EGR. Im gonna make my own block off plates from the old peice at work tomorrow, I think the line coming out of the bottom of the modulator goes to the EGR but not 100% sure not sure about the line coming out of the left side of the modulator still. Can you cap the PCV line at the intake and run a breather off the valve cover? Just asking cause my PCV and the line running to it are both messed up and I have an extra breather from another project, And Im about out of money right now

This pic might not help, but I still couldn't tell exactly where the lines went on the other pics. I think besides possibly the BVSV a line should go to the Vacuum Switch . Not sure.

Well when removing the EGR you leave the modulator or no? as of now I left mine and capped the other lines, I think I got it all figured out now, Made my block off plates at work today, I cut apart the old assembly and welded the holes shut and ground everything nice and clean and then powdercoated them both red to match my valve cover and other things

Back in the day....

Sometimes a loose ball bearing might find its way into the vac sensing input hose of the ERG rendering it non operational....... strange how those things happened...

Does anyone sell an EGR block off plate kit for the 3.0 3VZE engine? I've got a machinist friend that could make them for me, but if I can find a relatively cheap kit already made I'd rather do that....already searched Froogle, Ebay...etc.

Do you guys get for sure gas mileage gains when you do this mod? I think backwards from most people on the emissions issue...I figure the less gallons of gas that I burn, the less emissions...and consequently the fatter my wallet! Does this not make sense to anybody?

I think you'd have to be burning substantially less to really lessen the impact of emissions. But, every little bit helps....I guess.

I did the removal thing a while back. During that period I had so many other issues going on with my wife's '92 I can't say I really noticed much gain. I will say even with a burned exhaust valve I was getting avg. 17mpg.

If you want to expirament, all you have to do really is plug the vacuum tube going to the EGR valve with a ball bearing. It effectively blocks the valve from opening. No vacuum....no open....and no need to mess with block off plates.

OK - have to chime in here.

Tampering with and/or disabling emissions of a vehicle is illegal. Posting that you did it on this publicly searchable forum is actionable evidence say should someone you don't get along with decides to get vindictive.

Not looking to start an argument, just pointing out some facts you should probably be aware of.

Uh..thanks. But, it depends on what state you live in. Here there are no more vehicle inspections. Besides, do you really think they...the authorities..are going to hunt me down for doing this should someone tell them? I don't.

BTW the way, I REMOVED MY CATALYTIC CONVERTER...oops.

The federal emissions standards makes it aginst the law to disable emissions equipement on any vehicle in any state since 1990.

Make jokes and poke all the fun you want, I'm trying to make you a little smarter about what you post on the web.

I've seen people prosecuted for what they posted. - All I'm sayin'
