okay, onto my next project.
My e-brake snapped off my handle awhile back, im tired of not having it..
I heard that our e-brakes are two peice cables, so I could just replace the front section and be done with it..

Search yeilded no results...

first be sure of which cable snapped. if its the front i just bought one from Rockauto.com for 37 bucks shipped

 

yes its the front, it snapped off the e-brake handle.

Woo, I thought it was going to be over 100 bucks

 

dealer is like 60 bucks. that is the cheapest i've found. and i called the usual auto parts stores and they dont even carry it! i found that one just browsing online pretty good price though and shipped!

 

unless you have at least a 1" bl, there is not much room between the top of the bellhousing and the firewall to get your hands in there to get at a clip that holds the cable in place.

oh, there is a little pall (sp) above and right behind the dash that you have to reach up blindly and depress to release the cable from the handle. haynes or chiltons covers it well enough. someone may post up the 93 fsm section for you to check out.

it is a bitch once you get to the part under the dash (well mine is also a bitch because i have mud caked on the bottom of my truck so i ended up with a huge dirt pile on my driveway!)....... you have to pop out that stupid pin from the lever so you can turn it enough to get the old cable out. and damn there isnt a lot of room to work with in there! but its worth it to have a brake again. tired of putting it in gear when i park. good luck!!

 

i feel ya on putting it in gear to park. thats what my parents do regardless. drives me crazy. i start it up, BAM STALL. ugh.

kinda a quick debo high jack here, if the e-brake is a little worn out and uve basically gotta pull it all the way out to get it to stick, would it require replacing cables or whatnot to get it to tighten up a little bit?

 

Well I went and priced out a handbrake and its dealer only.
And I refuse to give my local dealer any buisness..

Looks like im gonna try online!

oh and I dont have to worry about getting the old brake off the handle.. it snapped right off and is hanging under the truck..

only one I found online was for a std cab..

 

thats exactly what mines doing, any have any info on adjusting the parking barke?
do the drums need to be removed?
thats not fun....

I bought my cable from the dealer. Cheap, and correct with the correct protective rubber piece, and the clips I needed. It can be a PITA to snake the cable around the trans tunnel, but if you have a MT and a friend to help, its actually quite easy.

 

btw try Strap22 on here. He can get em cheap for ya.

 

rockauto.com only has the front cable for a reg cab pickup.

My broke at the back of the handle to, freyed and snapped. I bought a cable online but it was for the 2wd (they are different!)..

So I just went to the dealer and picked one up for around $60 i think.

I just unscrewed the hand brake and got the old end of the cable out and didnt have much trouble getting hte new one in and screwed it all back in place.

All n all it was a easy fix.

This may sound very strange to you all, but I never, and probley never will use my e. Brake. I hate them. Had one stick in me one time, and it runed my brakes. Never used it since. Aprox 30 years. Strange right...........

 

I have recently purchased a 89 4runner, and when I got it relized the e-brake was broke. The truck has a 6 inch lift so I may just need to extend the cables. ANYONE HAVE ADVICE?

 

as bad as i wana fix mine.. its the front cable.. i just cant see spending 60 bones on a pice of wire. o and is bump starting bad for your truck

 

What about taking off the old cable and going to a bicycle shop to see if they have a cable that's similar? Or if we have some parts guys around checking it against another vehicle brake cable length?
