im trying to replace the oil pan gasket, as i was pulling it out while replacing my alt. im having a hell of a time getting this steering linkage apart. where should i disconnect it? i got a puller, but i feel like an idiot just tearing my bushings all to hell.

 

What motor?

In the 22RE with IFS, the pan will hang up on the pickup.
To get mine out I removed the front axle...

If all you are doing is replacing the gasket - its FIPG so you dont have to remove it all the way..

 

if it's the 3.0 you need to unbolt the motor mounts & jack it up or drop your diff to get the oil pan off.

 

its the 22r. how hard is it to remove this bar. geez

 

pan hangs up on the oil pickup. I think its possible to reach in and unbolt the pickup....

 

ewong is right. I replaced mine on my old 1986 22re and it took forever. Had to drop the front diff and jack up the frame. Also had to unbolt the steering stablizer and then unbolt the oil pick up thats inside of the pan. You first have to pull the pan as much as it will go then reach inside there and unbolt the pick up. Make sure you clean allll surfaces before putting the new gasket and RTV sealer on.

 

i did my 3.0 in 30 min pickle fork the 2 tie rod ends and it comes right down.the oil pan was like 30 botls sum studs the rest bolts i have a 4in lift so i cleared the diff.i got 2 cork gaskets from nappa one for the pan one for the flange thing . if u dont have a lift beter get sum beers and a friend haha.

 

Just unbolt the idler arm from the frame, and it wil drop enough. And unbolt the steering dampner.

 

on the 22r I worked on I removed the steering damper and unbolted the motor mounts and jacked up the motor by the tranny and then undid the oil pump line still was a hassle but I got it out and back in.

 

May work, but way more than is needed. I have found the easiest way to do it. (see my above reply)

 

if you unbolt the differential, be prepared with help, or some sort of jack to get it back in place. Suckers are heavy.

toyota_mdt_tech: Does this work on the 4x4? It looks like the front driveshaft/diff is in the way to get the oil pan off, especially with the oil pickup. It'de be great if it works, i just want to be sure i can do it before ripping it apart!
