Driving without CV's?

Just wondering if you guys think its ok to drive TEMPORARILY without my CV's on the truck? Can I stuff something inside where the CV goes on the hub side to keep the crap out and drive it like that for a few days?

Yes it is safe if it is a pre-Tacoma but you have to keep stuff from entering the hub.

Your safe as long as the diff isnt turning. From your avatar, it looks as if you have manual hubs, so just unlock the one that still connected. And make sure not to put it in 4wd.

Both CV's will be out of the truck, and both hubs will be unlocked. Why would it matter if it was in 4x and the diff was turning? It won't be connected to anything...

you still have to deal with dirt/water/rocks getting into the rear seal area. If anything does then it has the chance to lock up the wheel bearing and thus the tire = not safe.

Was thinking the CVs held the fluid in, brain fart, nevermind. I think youll be fine.

I helped a buddy change a CV in a FWD car yesterday, it held the tranny fluid in. Thats what I was thinking about.

I've done this when i first got my truck at the ripe old age of 17. Went trail riding for the first time and busted my cv axle in some mud. I took both cv's out and drove home with no problems. With that being said don't drive them for a number of days with out at least blocking off the hole in the spindle where the cv goes in. If it was a short period of time i would just use some tape and a piece of card board or plastic to "Mcgyver" something for the time being. check it every day and at the very least when you reinstall the cvs repack the bearings and check the seals for wear and tear. I would if you have yet to do so start looking into purchasing new seals and take care of the while thing after the fact. It shouldn't hurt the diff but the only concern is the hubs/spindles/bearings and making sure there is no dirt debris in them.
