do i want bigger tires?

i know this has been talked to death, but i am hoping someone reads this that went through the same thing i might be going through. i am thinking of running a little bit bigger tire than what i have now...93 p/u 4x4 22re 5 speed, stock tires are 225/75/15. heres the deal with my truck - it gets awesome fuel mileage and i run it 85% highway. but blasting down the highway at 70-75 mph makes it sound like i am just trying to hurt the motor. maybe not, but thats kind of what it sounds like to me. so, the theory is, bigger tires=less rpm's on the highway. but obviously i dont want to go to far in the wrong direction, where the motor is out of its power range on the highway. i did this with my bronco and now it dont go up hills on the highway.

so what do i do - step up the tires a little? like to what size? or just leave it alone? like i said, primarily highway use, so, has anyone stepped up the tire size without affecting mpg's on the highway? and if so, what size did you go to?

i am with you as far as highway miles.
I am going to step up to a 29 or 30x9.5x15. everything i have read indicates a little drop in rpm's and you use a little more power to turn them. i think after 31's you need to regear.

most everyone on here should be able to shed some light on this subject.

i run 31x10.5's on my '94 4x4. on the fifteen usable gallons of gas in my tank, i hit between 300 and 320miles/tank. that's not too bad. hit 4th gear going up hills.

First off, you aren't going to hurt the motor running it at high RPM's. When I'm on the interstate my tach rarely falls below 3000. These motors were meant to rev that high. I've ran some stretches of hill at 4000 rpm for quite a while.

I would step up a size in tire....I was under the impression that they came with 235/75/15's stock, I'm almost positive mine did.

If you are not the original owner, I bet the PO put smaller tires on.

Regardless, a 225/75 is like 28 inches tall. A 235/75 is about 29...So If I were going to bump up a size, I would go to 30x9.50 R15's

They usually rate the tires a little bigger than the actual size, so that would be right at, maybe a little less than a 2" increase in tire.

According to the gear calculators, you should probably have 4.30 gears for 30" tires, but if you want to drop a a couple hundred RPMs it stock should be perfect for you.

30's are probably what you want. they'll be around 29.5" actual versus around 28" with the 225's.

these engines are designed to run around 3k @ highway speed btw, and have no issue doing so as long as everything is running properly.

I've got 31X10.50's on my 4runner. It also came with 225's stock. I notice that it has decent power on the highway, but it is VERY easy to stall. If you like your clutch, you will not go this route. Mine has a chatter and it was replaced just 20,000 miles ago. More horsepower won't hurt you either, though(if you get 31's) I like mine just the way it is(mostly). Other than stalling VERY easily, I think you would like it. I think.....

30's will not have any ill efffects on your clutch at all. I went from 235's to 31's and hardly noticed any decrease in power at all. If you are experienced at driving a clutch 30's should have no worse effects than 225's. My last clutch in another 22re 4runner lasted 100k in a 4runner with 33's with 4.10's and 90 percent of those miles were stop and go city miles. I really ddint notice any power decrease and dont think your clutch will pay the price. Iwork at les schwab and now days a 30 9.5 is really a more standard size for toyotas than a 235. There really arnt many yotas out there on the stock size anymore. Most have 10's or 31's.

This may be the first thread I have seen where someone is looking to put bigger tires on for better on road performance.

I used to run a 4cyl '90 Pickup, auto tranny with 33's and stock gearing. I went from AZ to CO many times and felt the vehicle performed fine. I even passed a few people along the way... but that was definitely the exception not the rule.

I didn't have a tach, so I have no record of the RPM's at HWY speeds.

If your clutch chatters it was replaced poorly. It means your flywheel or your pressure plate are out of balance or not flat when installed. If you did it yourself you didnt have the flywheel lathed or didnt purchase a new pressure plate. If done at a shop they screwed you. Or you just have no clue how not to burn a clutch.

EVERYTHING was replaced. LOTS of hills here, some with STOP signs on them. Stock 4.30 gears(came std. with 225 tires on 5speed v6 4runners&pickups) and 31X10.50's make for an interesting time getting that mass rolling again(in the forward direction) I've driven many o' cars with clutches and never had this problem. But anyway, back to the problem at hand: If you want to get bigger tires, just know that it's gonna be more difficult to get that mass rolling with stock gears(esp with 31's) it does keep the RPM's down on the highway, though. I think @ 60MPH with 225's it's around 2750-ish(dont quote me on that) and with 31's it's around 2500. Before I got 31's, I never took my 4runner over 65MPH because the 225's were BALD. @ 90MPH and 31's it's around 3900(once again don't quote me on that one, I was paying more attention to the road than the tach) Hope those #'s help.

i bought my truck with 32 12.5 15.... i thought i was bogging during accleration and would almost always have to downshift goin up a grade. when those buelers ran slick, i went with 32 11.5 15 no the hopes to save gas and regain a smidgeon of pwr. Not much difference in savings, i actually loved the tire, bfg mud and it was an excellent offroad tire. gas went up, tires too and when i went to replace, i went with 31 10.5 15, again with hopes to save/gain. To be honest.....not much difference noticed, and still getting ty mileage. so.....if i am gonna get wakass mileage....then i want to at least be happy so....out w/ the 3point slow and in w/ the 3point Fo'!!!i am gonna 5.29 and 36" daily driver say the hell with it and enjoy the out her for the rest of her days....

My '93 4x4 DX V6 xcab came with 31x10.50s I think-at least that's what I always ran after I wore out the oem rubber. I replaced the little stock tires on the wifes' 4Runner with 31x10.50s and noticed improved (read smoother) ride. Makes about 5 mph difference on the speedo @ 70 mph, according to my GPS.

please tell me you're kidding... i run 31x10.5's on my 22re underpowered pickup, and i have no issues with my clutch. (and it's stock, 135+k miles on it). it's not at all easy to stall-

i really don't want to come across as a dick, but learn to drive if you think it's easy to stall...

if your clutch is chattering and was replaced 20k miles ago, then something was done improperly.

if you still have the original spare, check it, that will tell you for certain what wheel/tire combination your rig had from the factory. people go with 235 size because they are cheaper than stock tires and the size is within the range limit for the vehicle. the one upside is you will be going slower than your speedo shows, not as many tickets!

Or check the factory installed decal in the drivers door jam....The original size will be printed there.

I was thinking the same thing.....but I've driven many other vehicles, and they don't do that. It might be just me, but I doubt it. BTW: thats just your opinion, yer not a dick.
