DIYPNP on a 22RE, Anyone?

http://diyautotune.com/diypnp/index.html

Here's one guys write up and docs on a 22RET, http://www.diyautotune.com/diypnp/ap...-22rte-mt.html

I am assuming a 22RE would be essentially the same, does anyone have real world experience with this?

A gay friend of mine tells me that PNP is an acronym for Party And Play which apparently is sort of a swingers party with just guys. No real world experience with this DIY PNP, so unfortunately, I can offer no insight. What does this have to do with 22REs anyways???

I think it's an ECU replacement/bypass for tuning the EFI system. At least that's what I gathered.

Yes it's a complete ECU whereby you can use more modern/reliable/accurate devices for measuring air (among other things, including wideband O2s). Someone has done it for a 22RET, so wondering if anyone had for a 22RE. My understanding is aside from any kind of boost control and the air/fuel maps, the two motors should be fairly similar in terms of ECU pinouts etc.

The DIYPNP kit basically can be plugged into your harness and swapped out within a few seconds, making it something that would be easy to develop/work on while still having a daily driver. Converting to a MAF and getting rid of the ^&*!#@( VAFM appeals to me.

You can do all sorts of other things with the aux inputs and outputs also; e.g., fan control, boost control for forced induction motors, etc.

Judging by my last emissions test which was a 4 gas analyse. Why would you need to better adjust the fuel above what the factory ECU does. I've not got the most heavily modded 22re out there but quite a bit more than stock. Perhaps it you had a stoker or I can see a turbo if running significantly higher than stock boost. Just don't see the value in reinventing the wheel.

Or did I miss something?

I think if you have a longer term plan to go there, yes that is where it would make total sense. Aside from that, there's a lot that can be simplified on the motor by going here esp when it comes to intake & throttle + flexibility + tunability.

I am already looking at needing to buy a new VAFM, and MegaSquirt setups have always been fairly cheap all up (compared to the bigger commercial/racing products).

Get it set it up and do a write up. Of course we'd like to see a dyno graph pre and post. and Gas analysis too.

Have you checked out the "oil cap" thread, because it answer's your exact question... on page 793 or something.

If you want something simpler, with more power, put a 20R head with cams on a 22R, and run it carbed...

+1 on the 20 r, cam, carb and header for simplicity. I'd only recommend megasquirt or some other standalone if ur running some serious mods, turbo, or supercharger. It's not worth the hassle otherwise. I'm still debating on it because I've reached the limits on my factory turbo fuel injection but don't want to deal with tuning issues.

I don't think I could get away with that with CA Smog visual...

I'm much more likely to get away with a stock looking EFI motor that just has a MAF conversion and a benign looking air filter. The computer bits are going to be under the dash somewhere anyway.

Plus I'm more interested in EFI configurability. I have ZERO experience with carbs. Just not old enough (sorry)
