DIY 3vze CAM Sprocket/PulLy holder Timing removal

So, long story short.... the I just can't convince myself to purchase a cam sprocket holder, for my Head gasket replacement project.... .... not while I have a welding machine in my arsenal!!!

I did find a small adapter for a 1/2" drive braker bar, to do the same thing. . For a really good price Surprisingly.. available on Amz and the E bays. .. except.. ... .... well ... . I do have A welder, and a bit of scrap metal.. ... and a bit of an imagination.

but if I do buy that one.. it does require some waiting time for the delivery services.... .. will require a braker bar for that anti leverage action.... the very same brake bar that I just might possibly need, to remove the sprocket bolts while holding the sprocket, with the samee braker bar!! !?!!! So I'll need a second brake bar or an impact wrench... ... ok honestly... .... I do have those tools as well.. ... .. but Still. "What if!!! Right?!!?"

So anyways.. ...
I simply used a stripped out gigantus 1-1/2" Hitch Nut from the ball hitch of a tow hitch (for towing applications)... I welded the nut to a slab of 1/4" thick piece of scrap metal... why did I even keep a Gigantus stripped out, totally unusible ball hitch nut?!?!? WELL??? I Guess it was for this!!! But... Not to mention, This will literally be my second time using this enormous 18" long Doubble box end ball hitch wrench!! That .... quite ironicly... perfectly fits the ball hitch nut!!! Lol... who'da thunk it?

The best things about this $80 (???) tool I just created... (ok maybe I'm overestemating that!?!? But, ) well firstly, I get to keep it!! ... secondly, satisfaction that I made it. .. on top of that, it stores in my regular sized odd-Tools tool-bag... ... it adds functionality to a tool I Flipping Rarely eVeR Use. ... ... and if needed, I can still use my Braker bar... or the big big bigger one.... and/or the big Torque wrench to finish this project!! Also, It's a new tool for the tool bag.... while also not being a new, superfluous tool that takes up a lot of room, and will probably never get used again. ... or at least not for several years.... ... hopefully!!

Awesome!!!

And further.... maybe also.... ... maybe it can inspire other people out there.. ???

A few photographies.

Nice work.

Another way: If the valve cover is off, there are wrench flats on the cam shaft (27mm, close to 1 1/16"). Use a 2x4 to the edge of the fender to brace the wrench, and then you can gently remove the cam bolt without stressing the pulleys.

Didn't mention this before, I was planning on doing the oil pump and a badly needed oil pan gasket simultaneously. I Didn't realize I would also need a harmonic balancer holder as well!?! So I Had to make another adapter for the hitch wrench.

Another rusty nut of the same size. another piece of the same slab of 1/4 thick steel plate.. it worked out pretty well.. I did end up needing to use the beastly 3 foot Braker bar For the first few cranks on it as well as for the CAM sprocket bolts.. (my shoulder is killing me from that!). Then I was able to use the normal 2 foot braker bar a few turns which is a quarter of the weight!!! and then a regular wrench. So yeah I really did need the extra leverage with this hitch wrench & adapters!! For the bolt hole spread I removed the front pully traced & mapped it out the holes and tab clearances drilled cut and welded the giant nut in place. Exactly the Same concept as my cam sprocket holder.. slightly different design.
