Digital Gauges In Dash

Has anyone replaced the stock gauges with some digital ones? I know lots have done the face replacement or swapped the lights out.

Any pics of the new stuff?

Cheers,

Been thinkin about it

At $600 or so its getting comparable to a full set of Autometer - esp if you use the electric full sweep ones.

Biggest problem I have - I dont think the "number" provides the same human interface that a "pointer" does..

Some of them have programable "warning" lights - that makes some more sense... like the digits change to a "red" at a certian level and then start to "flash"....

I havent seen one that is as "programmable" as I would like however...

I would LIKE to see a dash sized screent that had
-- programmable "torque" curves on the RPM scale that worked off the gear selected
-- "dials" with numbers for the easier human interface
-- reconfigurable screen based on warning... for example the "bar graphs" and numbers would all be at the bottom of the sceen. if a sensor hit a warning level - the main screen would change over and show the sensor that was out of spec...

This is NOT my rig, but I copied these when it was up on Ebay.

I like the idea, but I would probably go with needles on the speedo and tach.

Yeah, there was a thread about it a while back.

I'm glad I saved the pics

Thats an awesome gauge swap. I'd think labeling things would have made sense.

Do you know who did that originally? I wouldn't mind getting ahold of the person to learn more.

One thing I'm curious about. How would a person handle the speedo signal thats on the back of the gauge? Its a small glass tube and appears to work off the magnents on the speedo.

I like some of the meters at Autometer, but none have any bar graphs or such.

If any of you remember KITT from the Knight Rider series, you'll enjoy this shop. Mark's Customs and here Digital Fiero

Cyberman, how many Pics did you use and where did you get the displays? Do you have any pictures of how you mounted the displays to the back?

Total of 7 PICs (nice to see someone here that knows a little about them). The speedo might be tricky on the truck, because of being mechanical, but I'm sure an electronic one could be sourced. I'll have to dig up the construction pics, but I basically used standoffs inside the stock gauge housing. The displays were suplus alphanumeric LED displays that I originally got from BG Micro. They're normally around $25 each. I might get a spare cluster and see what I can do.

Since there was some interest, here are some links to videos of the startup sequence of those guages. The middle section of the cluster had a non functioning voicebox type display, but also had the idiot lights and turn signals.

Left side (Tach, Fuel, Temp)

Right side (Speedo, Odo, Trip)

Step one, be the designer and build a trick guage panel. Step two, choose your guages. Step three, cut out and install the guages. The options are really endless.
