SOrry i'm new to this website. I needed a little help. I bought this 91 toyota pickup extra cab w/22re 5spd. It also have these BIG tires on it. 30x9.5x 15
He said that the diff have been replaced with something else.

I'm getting about 18mpg. i'm not that happy with it. Just wondering what diff can i install to get a little more power and save some gas. I dont really want to get rid of the tires.

BTW its so weak going up hills...

 

Hate to say it but you bought the wrong truck. The things you describe are the norm for the 22re. I only got 17mpg in mine from the time it was brand new.

You could try going to 4:56 or possibly 4:88's in the rear to help with the slightly larger than stock tires that are on it but it will be at the cost of a little top end. Bottom line is the truck is underpowered for what it is, and the 22re was built with reliability in mind and not good gas mileage.

 

I kept stock sized Michelin LTX tires on my runner, for that same reason. You will get used to people blowing by you on the highway's... there only driving so fast because they don't own 4runners......

 

True that!!!! I have 31's and only hold like 60-65 on the highway, and can only catch some speed going down the other side of the causeways here lol. I am at about 15mpg on my truck. But the mpg you loose and the power you loose makes up for replacing an engine in the future! lol

First off, we should know if your truck is 2wd or 4wd. for a 4wd, the MPGs reported are pretty average for mixed driving. as for the tire size, a 30x9.5 is pretty dinky in the 4wd community as it is pretty much a stock size.

you mentioned that the diff was swapped out. you can check this by jacking up the truck and checking the rotation of output/tire vs input/driveshaft. if it is in fact 4wd, you should check to see that the front diff gear ratio matches the rear or you may find out the hard way.

if your truck is 2wd, then yes, your MPGs suck and something is wrong because you should be averaging at least 25mpg.

in my 93, i get between 15-22mpg depending on what type of driving i do.

 

Whaaaaat? I can hit 80+ no problem with my 4800lb 22re powered 2nd gen 4runner and I have 31x10.5s on 4.10s


18? That would be nice to get around town. I average 14, but I hit 4.5K rpm daily I get 23mpg hwy easily on long trips, which is better than a lot of other, newer vehicles ( my sister's '07 Heep Liberty with the 6spd manual comes to mind)

 

Also, do you downshift when you go up hills large hills?

Maybe your engine is in need of a major tune-up. Spend some money and give her a good tune-up

Its a 2wd. The engine was recently tune up. Pretty much everything is new beside the head block and lower block. I do downshift whenever i go up hills. I can barely hit 80 on the highway. I believe the dummy that sold me the car, installed some weak ass diff... Like a half ton off a single cab or something. My buddy's truck runs hellla better than mine. With the same setup! DDAMN!

Should i fine myself a one ton diff off a 87 toyota pickup longbed truck?

 

donnytran- just to give you an idea: My '90 pickup, bone stock, factory wheels, regular tires, 175k miles ,22R (carb) 4spd manual, no mods, I just commute with it (75% hwy/ 25% city) gets 28-29 mpg- & it's not even tuned perfectly.

I should also mention that I'm a super gentle driver & I coast in neutral alot, so I wouldn't expect everyone to be getting as good an MPG as I do.

 

Well mine is a Frankenstein. 4x4 EX Turbo, EXT Cab, with a 22, 20R hybrid thats rigged together with a carb that's more than likely 6 years OLDER than I am and never rebuilt. I run the CRAP out of it. And the zombie killer push-bar add more weight. So that's why I get bad mileage. And NO I didn't make it that way, i bought it like that. If you want fuel economy, buy a honda. If you want a reliable tank and eco killer you get a yoda!

 

What do everyone think if i get a diff that is a 4.10 for my 30x9.5?

what rpm will it rev if i'll be going around 70? 22re rwd. 5 spd

 

with your set up I would say roughly 2500 rpms. You should where you powerband is and try to stay somewhere around there.

 

Ive got a 4 runner on 35s runnin 4.88s and i get between 14-15 mpg cruzin around 75.
