Diesel conversion: Auto or 5spd?
I am looking at doing a 3.0L I4 diesel conversion on my 91 and wondered if anyone had tried putting a 5 spd behind one of these. I love shifting gears and am not looking forward to the auto that comes with the package, but I've heard the diesel does better with an auto. Any comments?

Are you getting yours from Jarco? Thats where mine is coming from. It should be in around the end of the month. I have been throwing around that idea for quite some time now. But the problem is not finding the needed mechanical parts, but figuring out how to fool the computer. The diesel motor computer also controls the tranny. The manual tranny uses a different computer than the auto as the auto one needs feedback from the tranny to make the motor run right for some reason. Also one good thing about the tranny is it has a high overdrive and it is suprisingly faster than the manual because it shifts faster so there is less turbo lag. I'm putting my 1kzte in a 92 xtra cab V6 pickup. Also these autos behind the diesels are supposed to be much stronger than what they had behind the 3vze's here.

Hello
I've got the 2.4 EFI turbo diesel in mine with an auto box - it is an excellent combination. I do quite a bit of off roading and I prefer not having to think about the clutch when on the trail.
The Toyota diesels work really well with the 340 tranny.

Thanks for the replies. I realize this hasn't been done by hardly anyone. I guess I'll just wimp out and do the Auto thing so I don't have computer issues. Not to mention -where would I get a diesel flywheel?
