Is it safe to fire it up when there is no fan, radiator or hoses? Or will I be bathing in antifreeze...

You CAN if you drain all the coolant out of it and don't let it run for more than several seconds. Try using plain water instead of coolant until you get it running right; that'll save you some trouble.

I do not understand the distributor timing. Here is how it looks inside the cap.

still sputtering and choking itself to death. I just started it up for a sec with no coolant and it stumbles and smokes a bit then dies! Do I need to reset the ECU? I am out of ideas...

will this make it not want to start?
or if it cranks good but still wont run right like not idel good and bogg down and die?

This might be a long shot - but your injectors could be stuck, but I don't think they would be stuck open. Does it still look like its flooding?
