How sure are you that the timing is correct?
And the fuel is good.
(Be careful)
I believe I've read lots of stuff on this... a search is in order as well as waiting for the experts to weigh in.

I am getting spark and have fuel. it almost wants to start chugs a little then no go. i only have open headers and the o2 is not hooked up would this cause it not to start? i tried turning the dist 180 out and not even a pop just cranks. put it back the way it was and again it almost trys to start but nothing. please help.

its been asked, but... is the timing set right? once i replaced the water pump. i screwed up with the camshaft sprockets though. i had one 180 degrees to where it was supposed to be. biiig brain fart. needless to say, i won't make that mistake again...

If you've dumped a bunch of fuel in it, I DO NOT recommend hooking up the O2 sensor; it could ruin it. The O2 doesn't read until the engine heats up, anyway.
Are you sure you got your valve timing correct?

This may sound stupid, but last time I opened my engine up to the elements like that and loosened everything up real good, it took FOREVER to get it to turn over. Finally, after roughly 50 tries over several days, it started right up out of the blue.

i set the timing right both dots on cam pulleys were straight up and the crank was on 0. do u think i flooded it? or maybe the dist is 180 still? I cant hook the o2 up yet because i still have to put the downey crossover on and hook up the rest of the exhaust. I was trying to start it with open headers and the o2 not hooked up. if the o2 is not hooked up will it still start?

sounds like its flooded, try holding the gas to the floor and leaving it there when cranking. before you do this make sure there is no raw fuel those open headers will ignite.

It should start with no O2. Heck, I ran mine last weekend without a O2 at all because my exhaust left the vehicle. Long story.
Anyway... I'd double and triple check that you are not 180 out with the dist. After my HG, I was 180 off and it would snort and stutter but no fire. I occasionally got a real healthy backfire and turned the dist 180. Blam... off she went.
That was just with headers installed, no O2, no cat, no muffler. Drove it up to the local exhaust shop the next morning. That sounded cool.

What is your test that shows spark is present?
What is your test that shows fuel is present?
Not saying your wrong... just looking to verify where you currently stand.
