This darn Toyota.....

A long post but I hope you folks enjoy it. Not much, if any, tech here but read and enjoy.

I've had 4x4's since my first 86 F250 in diesel several years ago and told myself that I'd never ever own anything that didn't have a second differential. So begins the story. I went from that one to a 97 one ton 4 door diesel on 38's (some sort of small penis joke here) that pulled plenty of girls but never got into anything deeper than beach sand. From that we go to my first 77 scout II, then to my second 77 scout II (this one in factory diesel, on 38's, spools, rock ram steering, full cage, winch etc and lots of body damage). Man that thing would crawl like a fiend on steroids.

After I sold the last scout I decided I'd never go off road again, too old and things are darn expensive to replace. So I jumped into a 2000 4runner (4x4 also and currently for sale) and became the perfect little yuppie husband (wife is also up for grabs due to a recent divorce).

Then this damn 1986 SR5 falls in my lap and after some minor repair it runs like a top and is a hell of a lot of fun to drive. So here begins the issue. I'm going to regear it, lock the back end, lift it just a little and sling some new 33's under it. It has some dents, stock radio, is underpowered and doesn't turn heads anywhere I go. So why is it that I've come to enjoy this little truck a hell of a lot more than any vehicle I've ever owned? I swear there's some kind of drug in the headliner that makes me want to drop into a trail (bone stock) and run the crap out of it. Of course most of you haven't helped by posting trail pics and letting me see just how tough these things are. So it's your fault that I'm getting geared back up to drop into a rock run and piss off every Jeep guy I can find......

What is it that makes these things so great? Heck I've had a half dozen offers on it (some of which were twice what I paid and have into it).

Just a small rant from a rookie Yota cat. Thanks for reading.
Ricky.

I totally feel ya on this. I'm on my 3rd 4WD Toyota and I want to do so much to it that it constantly fills my head with ideas for modifications every day. I've even decided that my ultimate "reachable" goal would be to open up a Toyota 4WD shop specializing in... you guessed it Toyotas and making them more capable than they were already.

This Toyota is the first I've ever owned - I've got a 1984 Ramcharger sitting in my driveway, 36" bias super swampers, big ol' built 360 V8, locked front and rear, super flexy springs, and I'd rather wheel this stupid IFS Toyota.

I don't know why. I think it's the wheelbase.

I'm on my 3'rd 4Runner. First was a '97, mint & LOVED it. Needed a house, sold it and moved down to a '91. Wheeled the piss outta it for the same reasons: I DUNNO! It just said "hey.. you can drive over that hill there"... and I couldn't resist.

Picked up a '95 a few days ago for a DD. I'm so stoked about it. Nearly mint, as the 91 is getting a bit ragged . Gonna swap AC into it over the summer too. But the weirdest thing happened. I drove it home tonight and you know what it said?

"Hey... see that hill?"

This 88 pickup of mine is my 2nd Toyota...I also own a 92 FJ80. I've had both on the trails, and have been equally impressed by both. You just can't kill these damn trucks. Over 200k miles on my FJ and close to that on my pickup. I've owned many rigs over the past few years, and a few built up for hardcore wheeling much more than these two...but I actually enjoy wheeling these Toyotas I have more than the other rigs.

Glad you're happy with your pickup. Sounds like you've made the right choice
