CV's: getting the axle past the flange

I'm in the process of re-building my CV axles, and am learning exactly how much of a PITA they are to get out.

I took a look at the "quick change CV" mod, and really like it. Plus, with the amount of rust on my truck, I'll take any excuse to get new hardware.

However, I've looked through my Hanes manual, but can't seem to find how to remove the CV to Diff flange. And based on how much of a PITA my BJ studs were to remove, I don't think I'd be able to pound out the studs while still on the truck.

Also, on the subject of rusted stuff, can someone tell me what size the t-bar adjusting nuts are?

I have never had luck with the c-clamp method described in the writeup, but had not problem knocking them out. I found the easiest way was to use the beam from the high-lift as a kinda slide hammer. Spray some PB Blaster on there and they'll come out.

The flange your talking about is the one with the stub shaft on it right? It has a compression clip that holds it into the carrier. You will have to pop it out, either by removing the diff cover, or from the outside w/out damaging it.

Yes it's the one with the stub shaft. Where exactly is the compression clip on it? just inside the housing, or is it actually accessable from the outside.

Either way, I'll go poke around somemore to see if I can find out myself. Thanks

Well, as luck would have it I managed to get the studs out without removing the flanges.

F****** CV axles though, even with all the studs out I still can't get the drivers side axle off. Don't know how I managed to get the passengers side off (luck I guess).

BFH

Big prybar

I mean the ONLY value in the thing is the core charge, don't worry about "breaking" it! (Just be aware that you can pop off the "lid" on the inside and grease will be everywhere.

I was thinking about using a BFH and a crowbar, but my CV's are actually in pretty good shape, so I'm planning just to tear them apart and redo the boots/re-grease.

Plus, if I need a prybar to get them out, I don't see getting them back in being very easy.
