CV Axles question

CV Axles question
I recently finished replacing the CV axles on my 90 4runner (3.slow, 4x4).
When I was putting everything back together on the driver's side, there was only room for the snap ring and not the spacer. The snapring I am talking about is the one that holds the axle from sliding back into the steering knuckle. Also, on the engine side of the steering knuckle, the cv axle does not want to stay seated against the oil seal on the knuckle. I can push it up against it, but it just pushes back out so there is a gap of about 1/2" there.
There is nothing that I can see blocking it.
Any ideas? :pat:

If I understand, you are talking about the same side, right? The side where you couldn't get the washer in is the same side that won't stay tight against the dust seal?
First, here's a tip for pulling the axle tight so you can get the washer and snap ring in place. Put the bolt in the end a few turns and hook it with a claw hammer. You can then easily pull on it.
Second, I suspect that your snap ring came undone. That's the only thing that would allow the axle to back out enough that the dust ring won't seal. When you get the washer and the ring back in place, the dust ring should stay sealed.
Don't drive it this way! Fix it right away.

this has happend to me a couple time (i;ve replaced the CVs 6 times in a year and a half) use the gold safty washer/bolt and a claw hammer or small crow bar to pull the CV it will go, i promise. you have to get the rubber grease seal to go into place. failure to get it to set will result in water getting inside your spinle shaft and ruining the wheel bearing.
