CV Axles interchangable?

Are the drivers side and passenger side CV axles the same?

I have a torn cv boot and as per a suggestion on the board here, I am going to replace the whole axle, repair the boot on the old one (that is still good as far as I can tell) and keep it as a spare for the trail. So lets say I should break the other axle (driver side) on the trail, can I use the passenger side axle as a replacement?
