I am replacing my half shafts on my 1990 4runner 4x4 and am having trouble removing the cone washers from the front wheels. Any suggestions. I tried using a tapered punch but that wasn't working at all.

I found tapping on the side of the hubs with a hammer worked, not hard enough to dent them but not too lightly either. And leave the nuts on the end of the studs a couple of turns, trying to find the cone washers after they shoot off at Mach 1 can be a PITA.

 

Yeah...what Eric said. Take about a 3 pound sledge and hit the hub right above the stud. Be sure and have the nut on the hub. I can see a bit of a flat spot in your pic where it looks like it's been done before. Put anti seize on them when you replace.
I replaced the studs on the front diff flange with bolts so it's real easy to replace the CV's next time. Good luck

Just a suggestion.....

A 3lb'r will work, for sure. But, I've just used a ball peen hammer (flat end) resting against the hub above each washer/stud (with the nuts on) and then strike that with another hammer. Seems to have less impact on potentially ding'n up the hub and much less chance of accidentally striking a stud. Of course, PB Blaster first...
