ct26 turbo question

Thinking about doing this swap after the stock turbo goes out. Was wondering if anyone had any experience/knowledge on these brand new turbos on ebay. They seem too good to be true,and there's alot of different sellers selling these in this price range. Are they just cheap chinese peices of ˟˟˟˟ that are gonna fail right away? http://compare.ebay.com/like/1205118...=263602_309572

Mine was, don't get me wrong they work well, it's just the one I got immediately blew an oil seal and now boosts oil aswell as air, but it does alright at 11psi no problem, plus my seller is sending me a rebuild kit for free which included new seals, bearings ect..
If your going to get one, get the little bit more expensive ones that come with the year warrantee.

Is there much fabrication to fit this turbo to the trucks?

You need to ream out the hols on the CT26 to fit it to the CT20 bolt pattern on the manifold, you need to fabricate an oil feed/crain line, usually by welding the CT26 oil flange onto the CT20 hard lines. You need to fabricate your own downpipe. You need to fabricate an intake pipe from the AFM to turbo, and from the turbo to intake manifold.

It's a shame, I have a 57-trim CT26 sitting in my garage, and then I spun a rod bearing on my turbo motor. I was going to do the swap myself.

I still haven't run this truck that much since I got it. I went a couple miles to my friend's house tonight.It has an exhaust leak when cold,then when it warms up it seems to go away mostly. I noiced after I fired it up after it sat a little while at my friend's house, I had the hood up and revved it up a couple times,and saw a little smoke come from the exhaust manifold area. It seemed to not smoke after a couple of revs,so I don't know if there's a crack in the manifold,and once it's warm it expands enough to close the crack up a little? Or maybe with all the oil leaks on this thing I just cooked some of the oil off. It looked like there was force behind it though.

It's very possible. The 22R-TE manifolds are known for cracking on the bottom. The problem is you need to take it off to inspect for cracks.

Why not use a ct20 turbo ? Because if you can get your hands on a 2.4 hilux surf then you've got everything you need, manifold, turbine outlet elbow, oil feed and return, boost compensator,etc
It's not a very hard project to do at all, the most difficult thing will be the turbine outlet elbow, they're so rare (out here anyway) and took me weeks to find one, my local exhaust shop could fab one up either because they need the part to copy.

I meant a replacement manifold,I already have a ct20 turbo. It's the factory turbo on this truck.

That and he's from the states where it's very difficult to find 2L-T powered trucks.

is a2l-t a diesel or something? So is there a reasonable factory replacement for these manifolds,or will I have to have this one repaired if it is cracked?

2L-T was the 2.4 litre turbo diesel offered in north america in the mid 80s. It uses the same turbo as the 22R-TE. The manifold isn't the same though.

Hey man, not sure about a Aussie spec CT20, or if you just don't care to acknowledge the obvious, but here in the states a CT20 is utter crap.


And I just don't think it's wise to suggest a person use it...

Sometimes it could be a lot of work, or it could be a replacement part and in a short time he/she/it's right back to square one, b/c the POS blew or need$ a rebuild. (That's how I've scored BOTH my basket case RTE's)

Here in the states, as far as I know the CT20 was only offered for 2 years, and that was 25 years ago...

If a CT20's been holding on that long, I think it's a crap shoot and should not be used or recommended.

With the salvage yards and disposable cars Merica has, it's just too easy to find a better option.

"As time rolled by, Turbo Engineering Center (TEC). Of Magalia, California found that the life expectancy of the CT-20 was in the neighborhood of 60,000 miles. When it comes time to replace or repair these units, Toyota only offers a replacement turbo for $1850-no service or repairs. TEC traced the CT-20's short life span to the routing of the oil supply line. The line ran directly under the turbine housing and was joined to it. This allowed a great deal of heat transfer and TEC believes oil was ultimately restricted which led to turbo failure. Another shortcoming of the Toyota turbo was the backpressure it produced. TEC tested a CT-20 and found at 9 psi there was 22 psi of backpressure and high exhaust gas temperatures. The conditions were ripe for failure."

I also found this little universal kit that would be nice to peice together an intercooler setup http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2-5-T...Q5fAccessories It just seems way too cheap. I work at a radiator shop and priced out just a core (I'd have to build my own tanks and weld them on) today and a 18x8x3 was $225 our cost! this kit is only $140 with a bunch of piping and hardware I don't have to scrounge up.
