hey guys, my friend took his truck to a mechanic who told him that if he replaced the crankshaft seal, it would blow out right after he changed it. is there really a problem like this? the motor is a built 22r bottom with a mild 20r head and it is fairly new. i have never heard of this before and i have been working on toyotas for a few years.

 

possibly if his harmonic balancer has a groove worn in it. if so then it needs to be sleeved or replaced with a different depth seal or just replace the balancer. I bought a new one off ebay for $65

 

Ask the mechanic why it will blow out again.
Is the PCV system working correctly?
Is the engine developing too much crankcase pressure?
There are many reasons it could do this, and fixes for all of them.

 

well yes there are reasons to cause this... BUT the biggest one i can think of is the BS factor.. sounds like the mechanic might be tryin to make some easy $$$...front main on a 22 is a walk in the park..just time consuming

 

Front or rear seal? Not that it really matters...

He may be BS'in, talking about positive pressure, or a groove.

pressure=PCV

groove=sleeve

BS=2x4

if it's not blown right now then why does your friend need to change it?

 

By 'blowing out' again I'm sure he means it continues to leak. If this is the front seal then it's because there is a groove on the seal mating surface of the crank pulley (as someone already mentioned).
Go to Pep Boys and buy a Felpro Timing Cover gasket set for $20. This has a Speedy Sleeve in the kit and is cheaper than buying a Speedy Sleeve seperate. The sleeve will cover the groove and give your seal a new surface to ride on.

 

ya my friend doesnt no really much about his own truck, so i couldnt really get exactly what he was saying. he said something about compression in 1, 2 and 4 but i really didnt get it. i should just call the mechanic myself.

 

That compression has to go somewhere if the rings dont seal.Get a second opinion!
