Quick question; do different year 22R's have different crank pulleys? I'm asking because for some reason the timing mark on my 87 22R is off even when the engine is at TDC, and someone suggested to me that maybe the my engine had a crank pulley off of a different year engine thus causing the timing mark to not line up. Is this the case? Or is something else not causing the timing mark to line up?

 

Your crank pulley is bad, when they get old they twist out of time because the rubber damper between the crank shaft and the pulley comes loose. You will need to replace it.

 

I've never heard anything about this, its possible. I know engine designs do get refined with time, but I've never heard about that being the case with a 22r.

Are all the bolts that hold the pulley on and aligned tight and centered properly? I've seen crank pulley bolts come loose, allowing the pulley to get out of alignment. Fortunately it was caught before it caused serious damage to the engine. Although they did sheer at last as couple of the bolts.

Rubber Dampener?? I don't remember finding a rubber dampener while rebuilding my buddies 22re.

 

Its there, trust me on that one. The crank pulley on my cousins 86 4Runner (22RE) twisted out of time and the smog shop that saw it wouldn`t pass it until he replaced the crank pulley.

 

the rubber on them are a hard rubber and its a thin layer so you almost dont even notice it, but id replace it with a new one. I replaced one with my car and i think it was only like 50 something bucks i cant remember tho. But id replace it if i was you, that way you know for sure.

 

Isn't the crank keyed to prevent this from happening?

Ah I understand now, thanks for all the info guys. Now the problem just seems to be finding a new pulley. I just called my preferred parts store and they don't offer a crank pulley for the 22R, so does anybody know of a good source?

 

The crankshaft pulley on the 22R is also a harmonic balancer, isn't it?

 

Try a Toyota wrecking yard. They can probably fix you up. If not, go to the Dealer. I've actually had really good luck with dealling with my local Toyota dealler and was surprised by some of the prices. When I rebuilt my buddies 22re, I purchase nearly everything from the dealer.

Thanks. I ended up finding one online, they go for about $100. Is that reasonable for a new one?

 

I don't know if I would call it reasonable, but I have not doubt that's what they are going for.

 

I actually called around my town and found a good used one locally. I paid $40 for it, and as soon as I get paid again, I'm going to buy a new front main seal and all of the accessory belts. The pulley has a very small groove in it from an old seal, should I sleeve it or can I get away without it leaking? Is it difficult to install a sleeve?

If the used crank pulley has a groove worn in it, then don`t buy it. you can get a new harmonic balancer from rock auto for 75.00 dollars. I bought one from them for my 4Runner a while back, and it was a good quality replacement. I know money is tight, but spend the extra money and buy a new balancer and seal.

 

I already bought it, but thanks for telling me about the one at RockAuto. And just so you know, the harmonic balancer from them isn't $75 anymore, its more like $96!
