Can someone tell me how to remove the crank pulley bolt without impact gun? I can't get the crank pulley to stop turning, I've tried inserting larger bolts and sticking a crowbar through the two bolts and against the frame to hold it, but the bolts just bend. I heard about sticking a screwdriver into the flywheel to lock the engine but I can't find the flywheel cover. Any suggestions?

 

No, no, no, no, no......hehe....don't stick a screwdriver in the flywheel. Good way to break a tooth..........on the flywheel, that is.

Do you have a long, 1/2" drive breaker bar?

 

if the truck is a manual put it in 5th gear and put stoppers on each side of the rear tires...then use your breaker bar, you can alos use this trick when torqueing the blot back down

 

when i took the pulley off my 81 i used a write up that said to put the socket driver against the frame and click the starter over for a spilt second... worked great!

Or, an alternative.......some like, some don't.......wedge the breaker bar up against the bottom of the pass side frame rail with the socket (impact, hopefully) on the bolt. Hit the starter and the impact will break the bolt loose. At this point, your radiator, fan, and shroud should be out. Also, disconnected distributor coil wire.

After searching the forum I found this chain method. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...y-bolt-130240/ After one try the bolt popped lose, I'll have to say it is the best method I've seen yet. Rap the chain around the driver frame, make a figure 8 with it and bolt the ends of the chain to the right side of the pulley while putting a bolt through the center of the chain where it crosses to pull the slack out. All you need is the chain and 2 bolts slightly longer then the ones that came out of the pulley. Very inexpensive. After I removed the bolt I used a harmonic balancer to pull the pulley off, and didn't even have to remove the radiator! There was little room to fit it but it fit with no problem.

the least possibly damaging way to get the bolt off on any engine is a way my brother -in-law taught me and has worked great....just take the motor to 90 degrees past tdc and take out spark plug on number one[or w/e motor u r workin on]. then fill the hole with oil and put spark plug back in....then take yer wrench and socket and take the stoopid bolt off...we got one off a 3.0 that was around 600 ft pds. and that oil held the crank perfectly..this method will only appeal to those who want the least chance of breakin somethin though..

 

Put your hand between the crank pulley and the belt then get a friend to start the motor. Your hand will get in between the pulley and the belt and prevent the motor from turning over...I think... try searching to see if anyone has perfected this method yet. I met a guy in the hospital who did something like this...

 

just put your bar on there and click the starter real quick like

oh yeah make sure the bar is against the correct frame rail or you may be hearing from your neighbors cause your wrench landed in their yard

 

Engine rotates clockwise if you are looking at it head on.
