Crank no start

Crank no start
What's up guys. I have an 89 Toyota pick up, 2WD, no ac, 22re. The other day, I was attempting to pass someone in a passing zone, and the truck shut off after it shifted into second at near redline. I had a vacation coming up, so I have just now been able to dig in to it. I can smell fuel after I crank, so I do not believe it is fuel related. The vehicle will occasionally start and diesel. I found that I have no voltage being output from the igniter mounted on the drivers side fender. I verified the igniter was grounded via load test, and found testing to pass. I replaced the igniter, and still have the same problem (coil and module on top of coil as a pair). Engine sounds healthy while cranking, and I verified timing is good with valve cover off. The gear on the cam and the dizzy look okay as well. I did note that while I was cranking to verify voltages in places, the alternator was smoking. I cut the belt off to prevent further damage to alternator. I cleaned the main engine ground on the side of the block near the front on the passenger side, and still not starting. I am stumped here, and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much

you've no doubt already checked this, but is there spark at the plugs?
if you put your nose up to the alternator, does it have the electrical burnt smell?
long shot, maybe go around a make sure that all of the grounds are present and connected, there are some threads regarding where to look.
