cracking sound sharp corners
Hi,
I own a Volkswagen Taro (hilux diesel 1991, 4WD extra cab).
Steering wheels turned to lock and driving at slow speed there is some cracking, metallic popping sounds coming from underneath. The noise seems more severe when in 4WD with front hubs locked. Also there is a low but continuous growling noise, which seems normal to me.
Another repair coming up is the boot of the inner CV joint to the left. It got ripped at some point. The inner joint itself seems fine when accelerating/decelerating on the road at 50 miles/hr. The boot of the outer CV joint looks good all around. But I want to make sure the CV joint inside is still in good shape also.
A clunking or clicking sound supposedly points to a shot outer CV joint. I guess this must be an evenly clicking sound due to the construction of the outer joint, unlike the snappy sounds coming from the underside of my car.
I recorded the cracking sound with a mobile phone attached outside to the frame, at the drivers side.
If not the outer joint what is causing this sound?
Thanks maurits
