Can anybody explain to me why I would have coolant in the air filter box of my '89 V6 3.0.

OK. Could the auxiliary air valve be in a stuck open position? If so should I replace the entire TB unit?

I'm not sure about it being stuck in any position. But it probably would be where the coolant is coming from. If it was stuck open you'd have a high idle condition while the engine is hot/warm. So you tell me...is it possibly stuck open? Though, if it's leaking coolant into the intake, I'd say it doesn't really matter at this point if it is or isn't stuck open(or closed, or in between). IOW, the valve's functionality is pretty irrelevant to the current situation(makes no difference one way or the other if the valve's not opening/closing properly, because if it's leaking coolant internally, it's most likely damaged beyond repair and needs replaced anyway).

So, as far as what to do if the AAV is leaking coolant internally. Yes, replacing the entire TB is most likely all you can do to fix that. Since the AAV is not serviceable on its own(no replacement parts or specs available).
