Coolant Leak

This one has me baffled. I noticed a small puddle under my '90 SR5 pickup the other day. Assumed that it was oil ( due to the dark colour ). The leak seemed to be coming from the front of the engine as the drip was dropping off the front of the oil pan. After checking a little closer, I realized it was coolant, not oil. Planned to check it out further but we got hit with a winter blizzard on Friday and I have NO room in my garage.

So, went out yesterday to dig out my driveway and fired up the truck to move it out of the way. Left it running while I played snow plow for close to 40 minutes. I checked under the truck before moving it back to the driveway but there's no puddle, drip or any sign of a leak. Parked it in a slightly different spot and checked again before shutting it off, again no indication of a leak. We got a skiff of snow last night so once more I'm out to shovel and what do I see under the truck ... another little puddle!! WTF ? Seems to only leak when NOT running, anyone have that before? It's a new one to me!!

water pump. next time you shut it off sit there and take a look at everything, it could be something like a loose hose but if it drips down the front of the block 'out of nowhere' then my bet would be the pump.

there was a thread similar to this a while ago, the guy had a video of the leak, try looking that up. i'm pretty sure it was his pump going.

What engine is this? If it's the 22RE and it isn't the water pump check the lower radiator hose and the coolant tube that bolts to the back of the timing cover behind the water pump. Could be a leak there.

Tracey98277, GenXr, GodwinAustin Thanx for the replies. Sad to hear others thinking the same thing I was. Had hoped that there may have been other possibilities before getting on the sub zero gear and climbing underneath to take a closer look. As I said, no room in my attached front drive garage at the moment so I may have to bite the frozen bullet on this one.

yota4runna While I can understand what you're saying and why, I've been on this forum site for a year now and what I've found is this. There's an incredible amount of experienced owners here who are happy to share their knowledge and experience with others. Tips, tricks, easy fixes and downright Kewl ideas abound. I'd rather read an opinion of someone thousands of miles away and maybe save myself time ( in freezing weather ) and effort. Just my take on things, but why not take advantage of the wealth of info on here??

Forgot to mention, 3.0 3vze

no problem buddy. don't listen to people who call you a moron on these forums. the forums are here for questions, imagine how useless the forums would be if it was all trail write-ups and shootin' the shat kinda stuff. we're all here to help and learn at the same time.

he is right. you want to be %100 you have correctly identified where the leak is, not just an educated guess. other wise your new water pump is going to be worthless.
