Compression test question
I was doing a compression test on my 22re today. My plan was to do a test cold, add some oil to the cyls, test again, then drive it to warm up, then test again, all to get a good idea of the condition of the engine.
So... no plan survives contact with the enemy, eh?
I got the cold test done, and the bugs started biting so bad I stopped after that.
So, the results of the cold test were:
150/150/145/145
All cold, with no oil in the cyls.
The question is... Are those numbers bad? I know a compression test should be done with the engine warm/hot, to get accurate numbers. I know 170 would be better, but that is a warm reading....
Any comments?
Considering the truck has 230k miles, it seems pretty good to me.
Thanks
Brian

A compression test is done with the engine up to operating temp and all spark plugs out of the head. I wouldn't place too much stock in a cold test.
Be sure you follow the FSM procedures, i.e., allow pressure to build but don't crank over 5 or 6 times per cylinder, etc.

Even numbers and within spec is all good. And, personally, I'd say yes in a lot of ways. They just don't have as much power, obviously.
