compatibility issues - 22re to 22re

is one 22re the same as the next? i think i found a nice replacement motor for mine, but i dont know what year it is, and for that matter, i dont know what year motor is actually in my 93. when i bought mine, there was something goofing about the a/c, the pulleys wouldnt line up. no real big deal there. but i think i heard some blocks dont have threads for the knock sensor? or is that like a 22r block with efi on the top?

no its not just the same. if its the same year, then yeah it probably is, but i doubt it will run the same. if its earlier, then its prob got less features and more miles, but if its newer then its got more features. its like a computer... things may be exactly the same, but it will not run quite the same.

All EFI's have a place for the KS. 22re's are on the side of the block. Right....22r blocks do not have one.

So, are you considering swapping entire motors? If so, and the replacement is newer, you'll just need the wiring harnesses and ECU for it. But, like WabFab said, it's easier to do some swapping. There may be additional emissions equip., sensors and VSV's with different wiring and connectors, and the air induction parts may be different...like the intake tubing and TB design.

You just need to find out what year the engine designs are. Or take some pics, if you can. That would help tremendously.

so it seems like the general consensus is to use my efi with the block and head from the better motor. makes sense. like i said, i dont even know what year motor is in my truck, but i know it is not the original. so, even if it turns out this motor is a 93, well...who knows.

Wiring harness from 89+ are different than the 86?-88 harness
I found this out the hard way when I had the injectors from my 89 engine from Craigslist remand, only to learn that I cant use them with the harness from my 88. Bummer.

the exhaust ports are round on the 22r and early 22re (~85 and earlier) and pear shaped on the later 22re (post ~85)
the early 22re has a taller head and shorter block compared to the late 22re's and are not interchangeable- meaning you can't use an early head on a late block, etc.

Yes. Use the complete EFI system from your truck, with the long block (pan to valve cover) from the 4Runner.

The long block is exactly the same from 1985-1995, save for the knock sensor and fuel pump block plate.

85-90 (90 was last year for Carbs) 22R blocks DO have them. They are the same block casting between EFi and carb. The only two things you need to change on a carb long block are the Knock sensor, the fuel pump block plate, and remove the fuel pump eccentric (which can even be left in place with no ill results)

Wiring harnesses are typical different every year. Toyota changes emissions parts nearly every year, and until recently would built a new harness every 10-14 months to accomidate updates.
