It could be the timing switch. They tend to go out before the injector does, in my experience.

Run a search on both, but I'd look at the switch first.

the cold start time switch is located in the sensor block in the back of the eng. Your eng cranks for 10 mins before catching?? That doesnt sound like a time switch. Possibly a cold start injector but probably something else. Did this happen right after you worked on the truck? Or has this been happening for awhile?

it has never done this before....it turns over good but it takes awhile to catch...it will run for about 5 seconds after you crank on it for a minute...you keep doing it and it will run longer each time until it starts to warm up then it will crank and run fine...i dont know what it is....thanks again

Number one....he has a 22re. His timing switch will be on the front of the block right next to the coolant temp sensor.
Number two, it does sound like the timing switch as that controls the cold start injector. This is exactly what happened with my '86 until I bypassed the timing switch with a ground toggle. It's also been many other people's problem with the same or similar symptoms, but..... it may not be his.

If it runs fine once it is started, I wouldn't blame the fuel pump, filter, or injectors....anything like that. And if it will start easily once the motor is warm/has been running, you can rule out the cold start system altogether.

No....that's the temp gauge sending unit.

Look down on the front of the motor below the intake. There will be two sensors sticking out right next to each other. One has a brown connector and one has a green one. The brown one is the timing switch.

Inside the female connector/wire harness there will be two terminals. One will be the ground lead.....not sure which one. Stick a wire into either terminal......only one of them will work in this case.....and attached the other end of the wire to the battery ground. See if that helps to start the truck.

ok....i did what you said and grounded the terminals out...with one grounded the truck wouldnt turn over and with the other one grounded it fired right up....does this indicate the timing switch is bad??

Possibly. You could try cleaning the sensor probe first. Scale from engine coolant and corrosion tend to collect on the probe and the sensor loses sensitivity. Then, you can also test it against the coolant temp....cold and warm conditions....to see if it's working properly. It will show a higher voltage or resistance reading as the coolant warms up.

Oh, and don't drain the coolant if you are to clean it. If you have a small cork or same size threaded bolt (unlikely....but, if you do) just block the hole.

Could very well be. Make sure it's not just disconnected or the connector or sensor itself is broken. The sensors back there (on the back of the lower intake manifold....under the plenum) are hard to see and tend to be in the way when working on the top end. They can get knocked around and break if the plastic is brittle. Happens often if one is not careful.

I don't have any pics of it to show you. Run a search on "sensor id" or "id sensor" ...."sensor identification", etc. You'll turn up some pics in other threads. Search by my username, too.

The CEL wouldn't be directly from it. There's no code specifically for the cold start injection system. It could, however, be "indirectly" related. What's the code?

ok it's 4 deg. out side and I went to start my rig, it wouldn't stay running very long and the idle was really rough. after trying for a while it would stay running for 30 sec or so. so I tried unhooking a vacuum line while it was running really rough, it smoothed right out and is running fine now. does anybody have any ideas. if I left anything out sorry I am new to all of this, just trying to learn as much as I can.

You should start you're own thread about this.....only because you'll get better response.

What vacuum line did you disconnect?
