code 42 and 43

42
VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT--NO SPD. SIGNAL FOR SEVERAL SECONDS
WHILE VEHICLE IS OPERATED UNDER HEAVY LOAD (TPS/MAP/AIR FLOW INPUTS)
--SPEED SENSOR/CIRCUIT
--ECU

43
STARTER SIGNAL--NO "STA" SIGNAL TO ECU UNTIL ENGINE SPEED EXCEEDS 800RPM
--IGNITION SWITCH/CIRCUIT
--ECU

I highly doubt it's my ECU. If anybody can pinpoint the exact cause that'll be great. Issues I am having on my truck is the speedometer and odometer is not working. It worked fine about 2 weeks ago, and then it just stopped working last week. The check engine light doesn't come on right away, but after it picks up some speed. And if anyone can shed some light as to where all those underlying causes are in the vehicle it would help a lot as I am more of a visual person. Thanks!

Vehicle is a '90 4runner 4x4 3.0 v6 5spd

Broken speedometer cable. That would explain the speedometer and odometer not working, as well as the code 42. The VSS(Vehicle Speed Sensor)is also turned by the speedometer cable. And since it's not working either(code 42), that's indicative of the cable malfunctioning. The speedometer assembly houses the VSS, speedometer, and the odometer. Sometimes the VSS will continue to work but the speedo or odo will stop. That would mean the cable still works. If the cable's broke nothing works(no VSS, no speedo, no odo, nothin')and you'll definitely get the code 42.

Wait 'till you see how fun it is to tear your dash apart and replace the cable. Just pray it's the cable. It's cheaper than the speedometer assembly, which will need replaced if it's not. Either way you'll still have to tear the dash apart.

Code 43 is a starter signal(STA)code. It has nothing to do with code 42. But might be a little easier to fix. Maybe...

43 Starter Signal

Starter signal (STA) is not input to ECM even
once until engine reaches 800 rpm or more
when cranking.

• Open or short in starter signal
circuit
• Open or short in IG SW or main
relay circuit
• ECM
See FSM page EG2-193 for how to troubleshoot the STA circuit.
